The only thing I over achieve at is getting grumpier lol…
@SSGToms, that’s the spirit and glad to be of help
Well the KET-T is off the deadline and back on the bench. I have 10 days to finish it and with my current schedule it’s going to be close. After a year on the shelf of shame I had forgotten how much decent work I had put into this huge model and it’s really a shame I never finished it up. I can see how I got kind of burnt out on it though. It’s a massive model and I’m having to strategically plan the finishing and weathering process - I almost don’t know where to start. I’ve got some Ammo products, some Lifecolor liquid pigments, Winsor & Newton oils, Prismacolor pencils, and Bragdon Enterprises standard pigments. I’m going for a well used but well maintained look with road dirt / dust and a little rust where appropriate.
I went to Michael’s and bought a long plaque for the base, and picked up AK Interactive Terrains Asphalt to cover it.
This just might take more than 10 days, especially documenting it along the way, but if the KET-T turns out the way I want it to, I’m bringing it (along with 6 other models) to the AMPS Internationals in May.
Wish me luck!
Very glad this bad boy is back in the fold. Was a treat watching it get built up and it’s on the final stages now.
Sounds like you have all the ingredients for a very nice work look and weathering phase…
Will be following along and intrigued to see what that AK stuff looks like …
Very Good and inspiring to see this bad boy going back on the work bench! Following!
The KET-T gets a burnt umber wash, then an AMMO neutral wash. The Ammo neutral wash almost ruined the model. In my enthusiasm I broke one of my rules and didn’t test a new product on a junk tank first. The neutral wash, which I expected to bee a thin grey wash, was thick tan paint! Disaster! I quickly flooded the area with mineral spirits, but it wasn’t going away; it was thinning and spreading. So I shifted gears quick - instead of a grey panel wash, it was going to be a dust wash all over the truck and save the model. With this much work into it, I don’t want to go FUBAR at the end stages. So, thinner and neutral wash all over the truck and the KET has a dust effect WAY before it’s due. I’ve had to rewrite my whole procedure. I’ll have to be careful working the other effects into the scheme and getting it all to look convincing. Haven’t started on the engine compartment yet, it’s all mint. I’ve got grease, grime, and fuel stains for in there.
Excellent save Matt!
Fast action & fast thinking for the save! Definitely an unwelcomed way to get the adrenaline flowing!
I bet it got your heart thumping like you ran a mile!
Better at times to be lucky rather than good.
Thanks Wade! Serious pucker factor on that one!
Did some touch up of the dust wash and started with payne’s grey oils. More oil work to come. I’m going to have to re-touch the dust wash after everything else is on.
That’s a fantastic save and recovery with the wash … The plus side it has a great dust look now… A lesson learnt, but it came out in the end… It is getting a really nice look and feel now …
While oils are drying on the model, I figured I’d start on the simple base. Rustoleum discontinued my favorite base coating paint, Flekstone:
So I had to trek to Home Depot and check out the entire Rustoleum line for a replacement. Krylon makes a “granite” but it’s really smooth and metallic greyish. It’s really lame. Rustoleum makes a few stone texture spray paints, but none of them grey! So, going with the least offensive color, I bought “bleached stone”.
This stuff is chunky so I don’t spray it in my spray booth; it would ruin it. I cut a cardboard box. These little yellow things are called Painters Pyramids and they’re very useful! They’re great for holding up a multitude of items for airbrushing and spray painting. Available at Home Depot.
This spraypaint didn’t go on quite as I had envisioned. It’s kind of chunky and spotty. It took 3 coats to cover all the wood. I might paint it grey to make it look better. It makes a good simple base though. I will be adding the AK Interactive asphalt to the surface.
I like the old RustoLeum, I use one of them for anti slip, That one looks like it has chunkier particles in it ?
Yeah John the old Rustoleum Terra Cotta was perfect for anti-slip surfaces, but I didn’t see it in the racks.
Yeah, they didnt have that one in the DIY store when I went, so I got the Desert Bisque on instead. Works a treat as well
Well I didn’t quite make the completion deadline. Had a few setbacks, but that happens to everybody. I might need another week or two to add more grime and grease and fine tune things. I have to re-do the rust on the outriggers too - that didn’t come out looking right at all. It’s close though. Then add the lights and we’ll be done. I’ll post completion photos soon.
Wow, that’s a great looking machine there Matt… You’ve done an absolutely cracking job with it …screw the deadline … It’s a job well done and you put some real effort into it … The different shades of green give that real look as well…Top marks buddy
^^^ what Johnny said!
That’s a seriously great looking machine!
Sweet.
