Kraz 255B AZ 8,5 1:35

Hello model maker

Today a wheeled vehicle, a tanker based on the Kraz 255B. The vehicle was built with the designation AZ 8.5. The starting kit is the Kraz 255B kit from RODEN. The tank structure was created in scratch. The wheels from the kit were not used. I decided to use wheels from NorthStar because they are much better. It is a model of the GSSD, as it was seen on the streets in the GDR during the Cold War.

Have fun looking at the pictures.

How compares Roden with Trumpeter or HobbyBoss?

Hallo HermannB

Your question is difficult to answer as the decision as to which kit I should use depends on many factors. At the time I was building this model, I didn’t have this question; there was only the Kraz 255B model from RODEN and I was happy that this model had been released. The requirements for a finished model always depend on the model builder themselves. I can also build a good model from an inferior kit. The quality of the plastic from Roden is not the best. That is why there are differences in price. Financial considerations also play a role in choosing a kit. The rivet counters among model builders, of which there are always some, often do not finish their models or do not even start building them. That is my experience.
Here are a few more pictures of the construction of the model, unfortunately the image quality is very poor.

Hi Joachim,
thanks for the information. A Kraz truck is on my list for NVA, I have to decide which maker I will purchase, BTW iI admire you ability to scratchbuild, I always wonder what references do you use? I have a SA-6 Gainful in the making and will soon get the SURN KUB radar vehicle. Logic step will be building the 2T7 reload vehicle. Since you have build the truck already, I wonder what source did you use?

Hello HermannB

Back to the first question, if I were to build the Kraz vehicles again, I would choose trumpeter HobbyBoss. The plastic is much better. The wheels in all kits cannot be used, so you have to resort to other manufacturers. How much detail you want to go into when building depends on you. You have to like it and when you look at it years later you have to be able to say that you did everything right and didn’t forget it. Don’t make any compromises when building that you will later regret. The SA-6 Gainful Kub kit is also an old kit from Trumpeter that has many defects. But it is many years old and unfortunately there is no alternative to this kit. As you know, I was already in the old forum and showed the 2T7 transport loading vehicle back then. I don’t know whether the pictures are still there and whether I showed a construction report back then. In any case, I will take up the topic here again. You can find reference material for the loading vehicle on the Internet. I think my last post in the old forum was about the field bakery on the ZIL-131, but I can’t say whether I had finished the post completely at that time.

Hi Joachim,
I saw your build on the old forum, very inspiring. As for the SA-6, I did go the “hard” way, using Trumpeter kit with Eduard PE and AM parts from SP Design. A little scratchbuilding was also involved. As fo scratchbuilding, I build the M9 ACE completely from scratch, using only Bradley plastic tracks.

Hello Hans Hermann

I’m looking forward to the pictures of the Kub, you definitely have to use other rockets, the ones in the kit are too small in diameter. You can get them in the accessories, shouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately I missed that point. I wish you lots of success with the build. You can also get the chains from Frul.
