Late War Elco PT Boat

First, a disclaimer, I make no claims for 100% accuracy, I know this is heresy to some. The model was done quite a few years ago when my eyes were younger and my hands were steadier. My aim was to depict a late war Elco 80 footer and I started with Italeri’s PT-596 in 1/35th scale. I wanted to add extra armament as did the actual boats when they took on barge busting as their main role. I wrote to MRC, who were the US distributor for Italeri at the time, asking for a couple of parts and they sent me several whole sprues! That generosity provided many extra parts that helped me immensely. There are 16 crewmen on board, four are resin figures, the rest came from two of Italeri’s PT Boat Crew sets. Those were mixed and matched to vary the poses, and all had their heads replaced with resin ones from Hornet. The fellow seated on the 40mm Bofors required a lot of work to get him to sit right. The Stars & Bars markings came from a 1/48th scale aircraft sheet. The depth charges were a resin item, but I don’t remember whose.

The boats weren’t very good ASW platforms, but the depth charges were great at discouraging pursuing Japanese destroyers.

The gunner for the 37mm was one of the resin figures. The base for the gun was scratchbuilt.

The guns for this twin .50 mount were extras, their base and ammo boxes were from scratch.

The 60mm mortar was used to provide smoke, and for the occasional shore bombardment. It was a Tamiya item.

The boat’s commander and his coxswain were a two figure set.

The .30 cal. MG’s were provided by an Academy set.

The after turret gunner was also one of the resin figures whose manufacturer I’ve forgotten.

Thanks for looking, questions or comments are welcome.

Thanks, Matt. I once kidded Georg that I would enter it at Armorcon, in the Ordnance category, as “A Collection of PT Boat Armaments”.
