Leopard 1A5 Esercito Italiano, Kosovo

Another Leopard ready to be painted. This model was built alongside my Dutch Leopard 1, but where the 1NL is the Revell kit of an early Leopard, this is the Meng kit of what is perhaps the ultimate Leopard 1, the A5.

There was a major temptation to paint the tank in that beautiful NATO three tone, but I already have two Leopard 1’s in those colors; a Takom 1A5 and a Meng 1A3. So I decided on another green one to buddy up with the Leopard C2 in my cabinet. I decided to go for an Italian vehicle that was part of KFOR, which is also the reason I’m posting this in modern, rather than Cold War, since these tanks were in Kosovo in the 90’s, after the Cold War ended (sort of).

Quick question for the Italian visitors of this forum: Were your Leopard 1A5’s painted olive drab, NATO green, or RAL 6014?

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted on the painting as it develops.

Nice job. So it came molded in this off white? I believe there was a change in plastic color?

The ultimate Cold War Leopard 1, IMHO  Something like a Leopard C2 MEXAS goes just a little bit past the 1A5.

Yes, seems that Meng is switching to using white plastic for many of their kits now. Took me some getting used to, but it’s not bad to work with.

A C2 is just a 1A5 with a lunch box attached.

I did hate that shade of green that they used in the past.

Yeah, dark green like Meng and Tamiya used on some models is not my favorite to work with. I like the sandy yellow, grey and this white plastics.

Hmm. Interesting. It would help with seeing the small parts.

Its a great improvement over their dark green plastic.

A nice choice of Leopard.I started building an Italian one without the add on armour. My wife kindly bought me the Meng kit for my birthday and mines green plastic.I prefer the grey plastic that Italeri used on their reissued 1A5 kit,Some of the older ones i have are in a lurid turquoise colour and the plastic is a bit brittle. As for the colour well in Mike Shackletons book on foreign Leopard usage the green fades to quite a pale green with a light grey tint.Id go for Nato Tamiya green and tone down a bit with lighter tones.
