This was my rendition of an M1IP with the “Long Turret” update. Took me a while to cobble this one using several Tamiya kits.

Took me a while, but it was worth it.

Do you have any info on what unit this was?
I can’t make out any markings on the vehicles. If it is the first time at Graf, then it would be New Equipment Transition Training (NETT) in early 1982; most likely 3/64 AR.

hi Tankerken
sorry all i know i was given these to help with a model i was building at the time . the NCO had just come back from Germany and he had took them. he said these were the first so must be early on and they were firing the .50 Mg instead of Main gun.
sorry but know nothing else . would have been around 82

Yea, most likely 3/64. They were the first unit in Germany to transition to the M1. I was 2/64, we started a few weeks later. IIRC they started in late January or February and both battalions had completed transition and were certified combat ready by the end of June.
The gunnery training started using the .50cal as a subcaliber device to train the gunners, then they moved up to firing the big gun.
It was a big deal the first time the tanks fired the main gun. For safety, it had to fired remotely, from outside the tank.
That way if it blew up or ripped out of the recoil system, no one got hurt.

That’s how the big guns are fired as well. The first time a modern US howitzer is fired after any repairs or maintenance that requires disassembly of major components, especially those in the recoil mechanism, they use a fifty foot lanyard Unfortunately it has been erroneously stated on this forum more than once that’s it’s because of the massive recoil.

Armor penetration testing on the M1; look how the crew just jumps in and drive out, even with 8 impacts on the tank.

Now, isn’t this cool? The Swiss do some testing on an M1, simulating battle damage on two of the roadwheels and jury-rigging the tracks… This is impressive.

Thanks for sharing this, I’ve only seen a short segment of it previously.

There is also a Brewster device for using the M16 that used .22LR.

Yea, I used that on the old M60A1 back in the early 1980s. I did a post about it a while back.
