M1095 FMTVT Build

This is a little side project I have wanted to attempt for a while. I wanted to build the 5-ton M1095 FMTVT (trailer) to go along w/an M1083 FMTV 5-ton truck.

Trumpeter makes a kit of the 2 1/2 ton M1082 LMTVT which is a lighter-weight trailer with a single axle.

I had the idea to take some parts from the M1082 and a left over 5-ton FMTV frame (left over as extra from the M142 HIMARS kit), and left over FMTV bed to make an M1095.

I cut the frame to the appropriate length and added the M1082 trailer parts to it. As with the actual FMTV vehicles, they all use most of the same parts, as do the trailers. To build the dual rear wheels, I 3D printed the springs and shocks, and made the axles and smaller parts from styrene shapes.

It would be an easy task for Trumpeter to create a M1095. But obviously, trailers don´t sell?

While we´re on the subject… How many kit of US Trailers are out there? Maybe a listing is due?

Not many.

Off the top of my head:

In plastic.
Bilek/Italeri M101 and Water trailer
Miniart Ben Hur and Water trailer
Various Bantam/Willys jeep trailers
Tamiya M416 1/4 ton trailer
Trumpeter M1082
EDIT: RFM and I Love Kits M1101/1102

There are more in resin, esp. from Hobby Link and a few others. Still not a big slice of the pie.

I wish Trumpeter would offer their line of semi-trailers as separate kits.

If you dont mind resin or small companies YMK, Miniman Factory and Hobby Link also have some trailers in 1/35 scale

I finished up the M1095 FMTVT today. I painted it overall NATO Green and lightly weathered it with some sandy colors. I added 3D printed air line connectors and hoses for the brakes, and safety chains w/3D printed hooks on them.

I loaded it up with various gear and stuff in the back. All of it is also 3D printed with the exception of the hand truck. Not sure where I got it. The cargo includes dented up 55 gal drums, an oil can, a spare tire, a couple dirty drip pans, a couple pallets, and a small generator.

This was a fun little diversion and I was happy that I could build/convert it as I had envisioned.

Are Miniman Factory back in business? I bought (most of) an M916 and an M917 (how much of it is in the box is yet to be established). This was years ago and they were apparently closing/had closed their business at that time.

No, they are still closed. This was the message on their Facebook page in September 2023.

"After 16 years in the business, MiniManFactory is ceasing the production of resin kits. We had a lot of fun with you Guys! "

Unless someone would redesign those trailers for 3D printing.

I wish I could take up the challenge but I cannot due resin printing and have no CAD experience maybe after i knock out this gun =smithing degree I can try cad but that’s a few years down the road
