Bright Star '80.
What’s the difference between the Grenada version and other Tamiya M151s? I see some extra gear but that’s it .
Not specifically related to Grenada, but nicely done:
Yes nicely done. I remember the hard top jeeps we had in Germany. Cool
Yeah, the hardtop is on my wishlist as well.
None, really other than what you mentioned. And the extra crew of course.
I agree it is inspired by it. That is why I said based on, not a copy of. Also, it has normal, multi-directional mud tires, just blurred by movement.
That looks like an Egyptian M151A1.
As RonW says, nothing, other than extra gear, new figures, and new decals. The basic M151A2 parts are the same. It still contains the pintle-mounted M60 in it as well.
I built mine using a vanilla M151A2 and some rucks from my spares box. Painted it dark OD, but it can be easily panted in MERDC. if I feel like it.
Kevlar helmets had just been introduced. Big transition for us during those early Reagan years.
This photo is of the Rangers that parachuted in at very low altitude. The Ranger Regiment(s) wore the old Vietnam green jungle fatigues. Bdu’s were introduced a couple years earlier and it was because of Granada that the Rip Stop BDU’s were introduced, the early BDU’s were too freaking hot.
I can just imagine some SPC4 supply kid going to the SSSC and buying all the black spray paint they had.
I’m sure black spray paint was in the supply system to be ordered. We had tons of it for painting our vehicles’ pioneer tools after every field exercise. That and OD spray paint.
I can not find any references of these black mutts anywhere.
Where did you get this info from?
A few sources. 1st, from my neighbor, who served in 2nd Ranger Battalion a few years later. 2nd, the photos which clearly show some to be black. 3rd, I read it on some online article/forum/blog/etc. that mentioned it, but I did not save, nor remember.
If you’re doing image searches or other google fu using the term MUTT, I’d say change it to gun jeep or Ranger jeep. Nobody I ever served with ever called them MUTTs, simply gun jeeps.
Yea, nobody in the Army ever called them MUTTs, they were Jeeps. The first time I ever saw the term MUTT was the Tamiya kit.
@RonW you can also try a search for “M151”, with or without the word “Jeep.”

Army formally called the 1/4 tons. GIs called them jeeps.
