Hello everyone,
Here is a questions for the M1A1 and Desert Storm experts. Are the decals shown below accurate? My research shows the “Tiger” Brigade as being part of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Armored Division in Desert Storm?
Yes, they are from 1st BDE of 2AD, which was task organized (temporary loan) to the USMC since they were short Abrams tanks as they were still fielding them. This one would have had T156 tracks as it was an early M1A1.
The below pic also shows a couple things that will need to be backdated if you go with an early M1A1 w/T156 tracks.
In the red circle is the earlier Gunner’s Primary Sight (GPS) housing with angled back plate. In the blue circle is the earlier style smoke grenade storage box.
If you are looking for T156 tracks, get the Trumpeter ones. The Trumpeter T156 tracks are one piece indi-link tracks. You only have to add the end connectors and center guide. They are not hard to work with at all and only go for about $25.
I know you are talking about backdating the Dragon M1A1 AIM kit, which is an OIF/Iraq invasion era tank. It will take some work and a few parts that are not in the kit.
A better option may be to get the Rye Field ODS M1A1 kit. It comes with all the parts and decals for an early M1A1 in ODS w/T156 tracks. It is very accurate and well detailed too.
Yes…I have seen it. I may go that route…everywhere I go I see it for 60-70.00…found it for 50.00 with free shipping. After buying tracks and decals…there is 30.00 dollars already.
