M43 Semovente Bassotto

Here is my recently completed M43, the vehicle is 3D printed (Phrozen 8KS) from my own design, as are all of the other elements other than the figure. If anyone is interested you can find my designs here. I used AK Real Colour lacquers for the paint job.

Outstanding design work and a nice tight build. Fantastic paint and weathering; beautiful camouflage.

Thank you. I really struggled with the camouflage using acrylics and switched to lacquer-based paints, the difference in control was incredible. Going forward I’m going to use lacquer-based whenever possible, they are fantastic.

Did you use the Gen 3 AK paints? If so, what was your overall opinion besides your control comment?

I agree; I use AK Real Colors lacquers thinned 50\50 with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner and get superior results every time. Tight camo patterns are easy freehand.

I used the lacquer colours from the AK RCS122 boxed set, I don’t know if they are Gen 3, thinned with their own lacquer thinner . I thought they were great. I have been spraying acrylics for a long time and have always struggled with tip-drying, thinning and detail work (I use an H&S Evolution CR Plus with 0.28 and 0.45 needles) and thought I was just really poor at airbrushing. Switching to the lacquer-based paint I suddenly found that, whilst still no expert, I could, finally, draw fine lines without ‘splattering’, the tip drying was minimal and the paint coverage and finish were as good if not better than the acrylics. Interestingly, even the brush cleaning was easier.

So, going-forward, it’s lacquer for me all the way, including primers, accepting that the colour palette universe is smaller!

The RC coded paints are prior to the Gen3 paints. I liked the RC coded paints. They airbrushed beautifully and I could use the same thinners that I use with Tamiya paints.
