M551 Sheridan - end of mainstream service life?

I’m aware that the M551 soldiered on for a decade or more with 82nd ABN after the rest of the army got rid of it (NTC vismods excepted), but when was it withdrawn from service in USAREUR? I have a feeling it was in the late 70s (1977-80 timeframe)?

Thanks,

John

11 ACR, Fulda, 1983.

Thanks Rob - I’m assuming replacement was therefore a phased thing, with some units handing them in before others? I’ve just been looking at some 2 ACR images from various Reforgers and they seem to have got rid of their M551s earlier. By Reforger ‘80 they were using M60A1s and I can’t find any images of M551s in Dualtex camo which 2 ACR were using from ‘78-ish (hence the stated timeframe in my first post).

According to this site, 11th ACR exchanged their M551s for M60A1s in June of ‘78

I was there in Fulda when we turned in our Sheridans for M60A1s, It was the summer of 1978. First Squadron in Fulda exchanged all of the M551s in 1978. The troops all had M60s and M113s.

I made mine in my second favorite scheme, MAASTER. First place goes to MERDC.

Please don’t make fun of the figure. I suck at painting faces.
