OK this is probably an easy one, I’m about 99% through the construction stage of building this;
- Now in prep for painting what colour should the engine be as there is no colour call out in the instructions?
- How/where does the crane (I assume it’s a crane) for the spare wheel attach as the point shown in the instructions on the chassis makes no sense as in that location the ‘fenders’ (a one piece moulding with the engine cover) will no longer fit?
Step 5
The engine can be many colors, depending on when it was built/refurbished. I like to use an interior green/light green color. Also, you can pick out items like the exhaust in rust, intake aluminum, wires black, etc… Most of it can’t be seen anyways.
Here is how I did it in 1/35.
The spare tire “crane” mounts on the frame behind the exhaust pipe. You can see it below and in the instructions.

Thanks Gino, thought you’d be the one with the answer. I couldn’t find any photos online but sure if I knew the correct name/model of the engine it may of been easy.
The crane I’ll have to re-look into as when fitted as per the instructions it then gets in the way of fitting the fender/engine cover, I’ll try fitting it after the fender/engine cover but that will have to wait until after painting everything under the engine cover.
The engine is a Detroit Diesel 8V92TA V-8 two-stroke diesel developing 445 hp in the A0 through A2 versions (which is what is in your kit). Here are a few actual ones to see the color variations.
Here is a slightly dirtier and more detailed Real Model resin Detroit Diesel version I did for a 1/35 M983A2 as well.
I opened the engine compartment to show it off.
The later A4 versions have a Caterpillar C15, 15.2-liter, 6-cylinder diesel generating 515 hp.

Cool thanks, you can’t see a lot on the 1/72 kit and the engine is not very detailed but its rear end is visible so I want to make sure what is seen is the correct colour.
I’ll get a ‘workshop build’ photo up soon before it goes to primer.
