Macchi Mysteries

Couple Macchi questions. C-202= Are the exhausts the same as the Bf-109E? The engine is a license built DB-601 but were exhaust stubs a different design? (planning a Hasegawa 1/48 202 and have read the kit pipes are crap. Looks like resin DB-601 replacement are easier to find.) C-205= Again, planning the 1/48 Hasegawa kit. Info states bulges under the wings for the 20mm cannon mounts are missing. Anybody have photos showing size/ locations so I can try to add them

This 202 has 5 exhaust nozzles visable and 1 hidden by the air deflector up front.

.

The Bf 109 has 6 nozzles.

I am guessing they are the same nozzles.

This C205 has 6 nozzles.

Where was that wing bulge?

The C.205 had the DB605 engine not a 601 hence the series 5 - C.205, Re.2005 and G.55 all using the DB605.

I’ll check my Macchi book tonight when I get home from work.

Yes. That is why I asked about the clone 601 in the C-202. Cannon mount bulges on 205.

“Where was that wing bulge?” Thats what SHE said…… The photo of the model is an early 205 ….. wing mounted MGs. The bulges were for he 20mm cannons, tear drop shaped , small -ish (8-12 inches?) and just for the actual mount brackets, not the gun itself. Sounds like they were kinda like here…. Hasegawa used the lower wing from the 202 kit . Should have made the lower wing for a 205 then just shave off the bulges to make a 202.

Greg’s Airplanes and Automobiles recently released a video on the Macchi C.202; at 6:30 in the video, there is a tight shot of the aircraft’s air intake and portside exhaust ports.

There’s a new tool 202 due out this year from Italeri in 1:48,

I’ve got the Hasegawa 205 in a couple of boxings and was going to look for a 202 but going to wait now and see what the new Italeri offering is like, hoping it’s going to be a good step up.

I did not see a bulge in any of the photos I looked at.

Neither did I…

Superb channel.

From Modeling Modeling review …. “The spent shell casing ejector opening underneath the wing is there but there should be two holes. This area is missing the small raised teardrop shaped “speed bumps” that protected the wing from spent shell ejection damage. The opening for the belt links is missing so you will need to open up a second rectangular opening for this and add its raised tear drop “speed bump”. I used an etched metal template from Eduard to add the second hole. See page 58 in the Squadron Walk Around for two good color pictures of the two per-wing spent casing ejection holes for a better look at this feature.” Anybody have access to mentioned Squadron book and can post the photos? Only visual reference I’ve seen is this from Italeris instruction sheet.

Just found a view of the bulges…

Weird they are not visible on the 1:1 one…

The one below is a C.202 converted to C.205 standards

I dont see the ejection port either. (I see a “soot” smudge but looks too far forward to me.) Museum just stuck cannon barrels on a plain 202 wing?

The related article above states that the conversion was factory-made :

[this aircraft] was sent to Macchi for conversion to a C.205 Veltro due to a possible acquisition by Egypt. When that order failed to materialize it was returned to Lecce where it remained until its retirement on July 1, 1952.
