Making a folded-back canvas tarp

No, not lost. Operation Tractable:

My comment was a sarcastic reference to “Worthington Force” getting lost on it’s way to Point 195, and occupying Point 140 by mistake. Unfortunately, that mistake cost the loss of that unit.

I had three great uncles with the NNSH during this timeframe.

@SdAufKla Michael, the more you post your built models the model I can see that you have a cabinet or a drawer full of IPMS 1st place trophies with huge problem of running out of display space.

Btw, I must profess…there is something special bout that Sherman.

I use paper towel or tissues for my tarps etc . I also use old sprues as bases and cover them with paper towels glued down with wood glue or craft glue.Works for me .I have a few bases like this once painted they’re great

@Biggles50 : Indeed. I really thought that might be the incident that you were referring to. If memory serves (and these days… sometimes not so much! LOL!), the Canadians were supported by Churchill tanks unit during that navigational mix up.

@Barney : My father-in-law also served with the North Novas, landing with them in Normandy and going all the way to a brief period of occupation duty after the war. When I build Commonwealth subjects, I usually try to find some connection to the Canadian army and the North Novas, if I can.

@Stryker45 : LOL! I do have a problem with display space, for sure! As to the other, I’ve lived in a “post competition” modeling world for many years now. While I do still enjoy taking models to shows and putting them on public exhibition, I no longer enter them for competition or judging (so no more adding to that display problem!)

Honestly, and at the risk of sounding arrogant, I know every flaw on every piece of modeling that comes off my bench. While I appreciate the time and effort the judges put into their job, the results of the competition or the scores and comments are not going to change anything that I do or the ways that I do it. I’m perfectly happy and content with my own modeling style (both biases and preferences) and my own threshold for accuracy and fidelity of detail and craftsmanship. The outcome of the competition (winning, losing, scores, comments, etc.) is not going to significantly inform or influence my work anymore.

(Just to be clear, though, there was a time when I both benefitted greatly from what I learned about modeling from shows and competition, and I was an enthusiastic “trophy hound.” I lived around the local, regional, and national show schedules and modeled accordingly. But, that was, as they say, “then”… So, I’m not trying to discourage or belittle anyone who finds enjoyment in entering model show competitions. Been there, done that, and I have a closet full of tee-shirts - which no longer fit! LOL! - to prove it!)

So nowadays, if an event offers “Display Only” categories or some such, I’m often there. I’m surprised at how often I’ll ask about that and get a negative answer or a “not allowed” if I ask may I enter into one of the regular categories and mark my registration paperwork (whatever it might be for that show) “DO NOT JUDGE - FOR DISPLAY ONLY.” “Not allowed. Not in the rules. Oh, we never had anyone ask that before…”

Model shows are still an important part of my life - I’ve been attending model shows since before I was old enough to drive myself to them. I do still enjoy showing off my models, talking about models, and looking at other models. I do often find inspiration or suggestions or ideas from the works of others - I’m not immune to change - but for me changes in style or techniques, etc. are now self-directed rather than motivated by show judges or comparative rankings with the work of others.

So that problem of what to do with awards and plaques is one that kind of solves itself as I move the older dusty ones to musty cardboard boxes in long-term storage to make space for… more models! LOL!

Those plaques make excellent bases.

Great Sherman, thanks for posting.

Any more suggestions relating to the making of canvas? The M10 and Brien Carrier posts were quite helpful!

I’d love to see a vid of a rolled-forward tarp being made and fitted on a 5 ton truck.
