Making satin black

I asked this question onautomodeler n my challenger redo thread but got no response.
I want to home brew my own satin black for the hood.
Anyone have a suggestion? I was thinking of flat black and adding a bit of gloss clear or the reverse gloss black and adding flat clear. I think that would be more difficult, I would think it would take more flat clear than the other way around.
Anyone have some other ideas it would be appreciated otherwise I think I will experiment with the flat black/gloss clear.

Thanks Joe

If you use Humbrol paints (enamels) you could test buffing the hardened paint slightly.
Try on some scrap plastic first. I did it many decades ago, matt green, and simply rubbed the paint lightly with my fingertips.
Maybe it would work on other paint types as well. The matt effect in matt paint is a surface texture and therefore sensitive to polishing.

You could also try spraying a satin clear coat over whatever black your prefer.

Humbrol makes a great Satin Black in enamel. Mixing my own I would suggest mixing flat Black to Gloss Black at either a 2 parts flat to 1 part gloss or 3 parts flat to 1 part gloss ratio and adjust from there.

Tamiya Flat + Future as an overspray. You can adjust the ratio of Tamiya to Future to get the exact Satin you want.

I don’t really have context on what you are doing, so FWIW, the new Tamiya lacquer semi-gloss black is pretty awesome out of the jar. Just sayin’…

Thanks all. I should have mentioned that I wanted to use what I had on hand and not buy to just paint one hood. Stickpushers suggestion mixing flat and gloss black is a good idea. I really don’t know why I didn’t think of it. Being stuck on using clear for some reason I guess.

Try AK ultra Matt and Vallejo’s Matt at a 3:1 ratio. Works great on leather effects and skin tones.
