having ambushed a tree,

How do you ambush a tree? “Ambush” suggests one takes up a static location of concealment and waits for the subject to move into position. Trees are notoriously static, so unless one mugs Ents for a hobby…
The model is a pretty good depiction of Colonel Munro getting his in the 1992 movie version of Last of the Mohicans:

Curious, if he has a sword in one hand, a gun in the other, who has the reins? Well trained horse. Wayne

Had the same thought.

I went with he stopped for a reason, noticed something a miss and drew both items. Then was attacked from behind.

Check the clip I posted, at about 4.14…

Yep.

Been awhile since I had watched the film. Seems they could have used bows more effectively at that close of range over rifles and use their axe for close in work.

Masterbox seems to make decent-looking plastic horses with riders. How about something more modern, such as modern U.S. Special Forces on horseback in 1/35 and 1/24 scale complete with saddle, carbine, backpack, vest, gear, pouches, etc.? How about basically making everything shown in this photo with the option of a helmet head or floppy hat head?
