Would a Gunner have worn full equipment set like this? I thought being mainly mounted they had the leather equipment with the cross the body bandolier?

A good question. I’m wondering if the rifle would be held barrel down in his foot like that? Seems like it’s a good way to get the muzzle clogged with dirt, not to mention potentially dangerous if the trigger was accidentally squeezed with a round in the chamber.

Stephen, he’s in the position of “Resting on his arms, reversed” (I might have that slightly wrong - it was a long time ago when I last did it) which is a drill movement taken to acknowledge the dead, say, on a parade whereby the deceased is passing. The head is bowed; admittedly his heels should be together but the muzzle is always rested on the foot.

Ah right, I understand. I’m speaking as complete civilian here, but I just assumed that pointing a weapon, whether unloaded or loaded, at any part of your own body or anyone else’s (unless you’re shooting at them) was a big no-no.
Always good to learn something new. Thanks.

Pleasure Stephen; a timely reminder too that just because the site is populated by a smattering of former military types, that not everyone else is! After all, we’re the ones who chose the totally aberrant life-style, and others - civilians - are the normal ones(!)

I agree, it’s a drill movement that can be seen on numerous war memorials. A similar pose with swords was taken by the four guards at the late Queens lying in state before the funeral.
See here: [BF1 ]What gun is this does anybody know? (war memorial statue ww1,) see the same statue all over the place in UK and i always wonder what gun he is holding. thought id find out here… : r/Battlefield
