I’ll have to dig up the video of me driving the T-62M in Afghanistan. I nearly took out several vehicles with the tube.

I had a gun tube hit my bustle rack, dented it badly and knocked off the collimeter of the tank that hit mine.

People don’t realise that when not used for the intended purpose armour can be quite fragile. Gun trunnions are set to within a thousandth of their lives and it doesn’t take much to move them and so affect the accuracy of the gun. When you are talking about putting a round consistently through a 2 metre square box at 2k the need to take care of your gun is paramount.

I was on an M60A1 and we were moving through a wooded area on a narrow dirt road at about 10 miles per hour. I was moving the guntube back and forth to avid trees as we moved. We got to a point that the location of the trees forced me to stick the guntube between two trees and traverse to the rear of the tank as we passed the two trees. That way neither tree would be hit. At 10 MPH you are traversing quickly while watching the two trees. As we passed the two trees I kept traversing around over the back deck as an open area was coming up on the other side of the tank and I could get the guntube back to the front. When we halted for the day the CO wanted to know who busted off the travel lock and failed to report it. All the TC’s looked at each other thinking what clown did this? When I got to my tank I discovered that it was my travel lock. Whoever took the gun out of travel lock forgot to put it down. My focus was on the trees and not on the back deck. When I traversed around over the back deck I broke off the travel lock and never felt or heard it. I felt humbled when I reported to the CO that I was the clown.

So the back deck interference switch didn’t make the tube jump up to 0 degrees? Even though my A2 had a short tube and no clamp, we still had the switch.
Remember, it was the Marine Corps…
