SOL Model released two new large scale figures depicting German troops.
The gunner is a bit of a mixture - he has Heer camouflage smock with tabs on the cuffs and Waffen SS helmet cover (the side springs and construction are clearly SS).
Once again, I will “jump into the fire”. Research shows that the Wehrmacht used Waffen SS smocks and helmet covers. There are tuns of examples. I always remark that doing research starts by going to the buildings in every town, we know the ones, the lend you FREE books. Not everything on the interweb is true
I can see a “Feldgendarmerie” (Military Police) gorget on the motorcycle rider.
Nowhere did Hohenstaufen say the figure was wrong, he was just pointing it out. No reason to be disparaging and sarcastic.
I’d be interested to see the “tuns of examples” (sic). I’ve been studying the Wehrmacht and the SS for more than 40 years, have a sizeable library of my own (much bigger than the normal section in your average library) and I don’t have many pictures of Heer personnel wearing SS camouflage, with one notable exception. Vice-versa, yes, there are pictures of SS personnel wearing Heer camo, especially 14th SS Division. There are good reasons for this; one, SS camo equipment was always in short supply, even to those normally issued it; two, captured SS men were frequently shot out of hand, especially on the Eastern Front, so why take the risk? Photos of apparent Wehrmacht men wearing SS gear may be 4th SS Polizei, who wore army type collar litzen.
In any case, books aren’t infallible either. I’ve seen a recent publication, purporting to be on an SS subject, in which the cover photograph is clearly of Panzer Lehr personnel! Lazy caption writers frequently make mistakes; there seems to be a sort of inclination to caption any pictures of German units wearing camo as Waffen SS. The subject is complicated by the fact that since the German police were also part of the SS umbrella organisation, police units mobilized for the protection of the Reich were issued with SS-style camouflaged uniforms to which police insignia were attached (viz the collar “litzen” as referred to above and the “police eagle” in a wreath).
Just as an aside, and not really my specialist subject, didn’t units of the Hermann Goering Div use Waffen SS stuff?
I believe they wore the SS camo smocks didn’t they?
Correct. They used Waffen SS smocks and helmet covers at least.
