Have a lead on an N/AW A-10 kit for a good deal. Pondering for a future project. Hypothetical question …would Mavericks be a viable option for night attack? I’m thinking anything rocket powered would be a no-no. Blind the crew and tell the world where you are. What do Y’all think? I’d think GBUs/ CBUs would be a better idea.
to my knowledge:Only one N/AW A‑10 was ever built. It flew in the early 1980s but was not adopted for production because the USAF shifted to other night‑attack platforms like the F‑15E and upgraded A‑10A avionics instead.
if that§ would be correct then anything will do as it will be a “whatif” anyway
I always had the impression that the IR seeker Maverick variants were developed for night engagements and that is why the D version is mounted on A-10s often.
What about the “fireball” coming from the Gatling gun?
Valid point.
Yes, I AM aware it was a one-off and the reason it was axed. And as a “what if” I can do what I want but I hardly think a B-61 or Klingon disrupter would be remotely appropriate for a “what if it became operational.” And still doesnt answer the actual question.
Valid point. I just remember reading early (up till Korea) had issues with night vision being wiped out by MG and 20mm fire.
I have the Trumpeter 72nd Kit; I would go with just Two Mavericks, About Four Rocket Pods, and maybe some CBUs.
well, for night and adverse weather, the gun or dumb bombs seem less appropriate, i would go for laser guided weapons and GPS guided
Yeah, Im leaning towards GBU-12s (X2) and a dozen CBUs (1X MER, 2X TER). Plus AN/ALQ-131 ECM pod (seem more common for PACAF) and Lantirn pods . Now just need decals for Osan AFB.
Don’t put too much, according to some (F-16) pilot I know a full load on a fighter is limiting the flying characteristcs to the extend that flying the thing becomes dangerous.
Yeah. Never use airshow displays for reference. They are just to look pretty for the public. I’ve seen things hung that arent even cleared for the aircraft type. Also know A-4s only carring TERs outboard of the landing gear did not carry a bomb on the rack closest to the gear. Interfered with the door. F-16s can carry 3 AGM-65s on a triple rack but usually only use two due to some aerodynamic issue.
