that’s why i joined Armoured, in the M113s we could carry potatoes, onions, bread and even meat and milk by putting it on the side sponsons with a thermal blanket over it, overnight it would get very cool and stay that way all day like a refrigerator so we also had bacon, sausages and even steak. we lived like kings.
sometimes when out on Ex they guys wives would drop stuff into the stores guys know what time they headed out bringing us cakes and bacon and egg pies etc plus sometimes ice-cream. they would pay the stores guys with extra baking for them.
below is a old New Zealand ration pack (1980s vintage) with the all too well known “Pools” cans.
we had a saying for them “A Meal fit for a King… here King come and get you dinner… good boy King, good dog” it was lower grade than dog food. it was gluggy meat with too much fat.

we also carrier what the Aussies called a Jaffle Iron (we called them a toastie Pie Maker) and could cook a sealed toasted sandwich over a flame so if they brought fresh meals out (which were normally late) we made into toasted sandwiches the next day.

one of the best things i picked up well before we got them was the Aussie can opener/ combat spoon. their rat packs also had lids for the cans. it was weird there’s were better than ours as they were made their packs in New Zealand at the time.

That’s a really interesting point. Looking at it from a purely practical angle, I wonder if there is any mileage in having some knowledge of gaining sustenance from plants as an additional food source whilst in that kind of situation? I guess the biggest problem being the proportion of plants that are poisonous is large compared to the number of animal types that are (are there any animals that aren’t safely edible once cooked? Puffer fish swim bladders is one of the few I can think of :joy:).

Dog livers are toxic apparently, so extra care is needed on manouvers around Springfield…

I suppose the answer might be - re escape and evasion - to eat the vegetarian amongst one’s group…?
