Hello friends, I’m going to build the tiger111 from this photo and I need some help. Just want to figure out what stuffs are in this two parts and what kind of shield should I use. It doesn’t need to be 100% accurate, take a guess and I will appreciate it.
Looks like an early production TIger I, so I would sugggest a Tamiya kit if you want something quick, but with decent detail and lots of room for upgrading.
As for the mantlet, i think the red one is on point. Oh; and the circled stuff is mostly stowage; spare gear lashed to the exterior of the vehicle.
Tiger 111 doesn’t appear to have the 5 S-mine launchers around the top of the hull so that puts production before ~January 1943, in theory.
So it could be from the same lines as Tiger 131?
Then the mantlet is different. Like the brown one then.
You can see the S-Mine Launchers on the left side of the tiger on the top of the hull one on the front and back corners and one just to the right of the spare tracks on the turret.
I’m far from an expert with Tiger’s etc maybe one of the expert will help etc.
Yes, I’d lean towards the brown mantlet based on what we think we know so far.
For discussion only from Jentz Tiger book…
No S-mines, could imply possibly 78th (Dec 1942 or earlier) or earlier but maybe as late as ~113th Tiger (Jan 1943).
There’s so many exceptions with Tiger’s etc
If I were building 111, I’d favor ~November December 1942 as production date if guessing.
Thank you so much, excellent sample.
Much appreciated, thank you for your time.

Those launchers were removable; the museum Tiger “131” doesn’t have them either, although it is set up for them.
In some photos you can see the S-mine supporting arms at the rear corners of a Tiger’s hull.
But in this case we know, from various other features of Tiger “111”, that it is firmly inside the period of S-mine launchers and it must have them even if we cannot see them.
The most important clue is the loader’s hatch. It doesn’t lie flat on the roof. Therefore the tank has a loader’s periscope, therefore it’s from about April 1943.
The layout of the side cable would be different if this Tiger was from 1942.

I can find only two photos of Tiger “111”, they are both from the side, so I cannot say for sure what shield it had.
This Tiger seems to be from March 1943 but more likely April 1943.
All of the shields in your image are therefore possible. The least likely one is the red one; because those sharp corners on the telescope guard are more typical of 1944.
But there is one thing that I can say: look at the image that you posted. There are two open holes above the driver’s visor. Tiger “111” would either not have them at all, or if present they would be carefully sealed up.

Agreed, I will keep the launch base.
It may be the angle of the photo, or the gear attached, but it looks as though 111 has the Pz III type baggage bin?
I know the Tiger quite well. That is the standard Tiger bin.
