NEWS: Trumpeter 1/35 AH-1W Cobra

Trumpeter has announced a new AH-1W coming in 1/35. Is it all new, or a rebox of the Academy kit? We shall see.

According to your screenshot it is a new tool kit. No indications for NTS parts.

The Academy kit is not bad. But the canopy has not a right shape.

In addition, this is made in several parts which don’t fit well, so not easy to make a good built of this element.

Werner’s Wings has made a new canopy in one part.

I have the Academy kit and the Werner’s Wings canopy in the stash.

Trumpeter has released a pic of the built model. It looks pretty nice. Of note, it has raised rivets.

I’m not familiar with this variant, what is the significance of the raised rivets, are they not supposed to be there?
i also noticed a fit issue with the canopy, the pilots seems to protrude whilst the gunners is receeded and not flush with the fuselage. On a personal high note for me at least is that the PE is kept to a minimum as far as I can see.

No significance to the version, just that the model is one of the first to have properly raised rivets. Most 1/35 helicopter models represent the rivets as recessed dots.

Not after i’ve just spent a small mortgage on the Werners Wings conversion set for the Revell large scale AH-1G they shouldnt

The top is the latest Z version but does convey the rivet issue. Manufacturers take a beating by us complaining on rivets. Lots of hand mashing with the Hind helos of late. I get why the do recessed. In this case they do look kinda big for the scale. Might be hard/harder than they want to spend money on to make them correct. Maybe when released and under paint it will appear just right. Outside of that good on them for a releasing a Cobra that seems to mostly good. Will see what the decal options and price point will be.

That’s similar to the Italeri 1/72 one in that they did the exhausts up and down instead of side to side. I like the side to side exhausts better as far as looks go.

Italeri kit is a pre-NTS bird.

no clue what that means, still like side to side exhausts, thanks anyways.

There was a lot internal changes, externally the canopy to fuselage alignment near the front changed. There was some cockpit changes as well. To my knowledge all the turned exhausts (side to side) are NTS birds.

Modeling wise if you used the Olimp resin on the 1/72 Italeri kit some will know but a majority will probably not.

That is true, but all NTS birds did not have turned exhausts. The two features were not linked. The turned exhausts are a late W feature and carried over to the Z.

Very much hoping this is priced to compete with the Academy AH-1Z.
