Non-Railway Modeller Needs More Help Please

No question G, you’re the King of 1:72 dioramas and have a fairly strong claim to the throne of all-scale dioramas. There you go, hope that boosts your mojo but whatever it’s absolutely sincere.

Hi all,

It has been some months since I last touched this build…lots happening in the real world…but managed to have a bit of a go at tidying things up.

I’ve edged the scene, it’s only rough at the moment, but it hides all the foam internal structure.

I’ve also lined the pit/hole where the bomb will be located, and I’ve added a drainage pipe, this hides a nasty joint in the brickwork, :unamused:. The pipe is just a piece of sprue and some stretched plastic, it’s not fitted properly at this stage.

Cheers,,

Greetings matey … nice steady update … real world always rears its head and throws a spanner in the works, but slowly slowly is the key sometimes. Tidy up looks good and an easy way to get back into it :+1:

Thanks John, spanners,, think mine might be the whole toolbox,.

Another belated yet neat update!
Yeah, real life has those nasty habits to meddle with all the nice things like hobbies…

Thanks Erwin, life meddling isn’t fun, :slightly_smiling_face:.

Hi all,

I’ve started to hide the substructure and tidy up the edges, below are a before and after image of part of the rear of the scene.

Before:

After:

Close-up of part of the natural spring.

This will be the first layer of vegetation, I’ll add more layers of different materials to give the impression that the ‘natural spring’ dips in and out as it trickles down the slope.

There’s also an area of ‘dead ground’ that I need help on, see image below:

I did think it could be the front garden of a house, i.e. dwarf wall/clipped hedge, gate, with a path leading to a few steps as if the front wall of the house would be just off scene (hope that makes sense, ;-) . The other idea was to create part of a WW1 war memorial…but if anyone has a view, or other idea(s), I’m open to suggestions, :) .

Cheers, ,

G.

My first thought is a piece of untended land.
Maybe the corner building has been bombed or removed for some other reason
leaving an empty plot thatmaybe be “developed” some time later.
Some weeds, maybe a gravel/dirt rut where people have been taking a shortcut
around the corner.
Maybe a plank along the edge of the diorama with a painted on sign proclaiming
that J. C. Feechie & Sons are building something or other.

Thanks for the great feedback Robin, I had thought a damaged building, but couldn’t work it through in my mind’s eye, i.e. if that building was destroyed/damaged, then the corner shop, given its proximity, probably wouldn’t still be intact. Though I guess a house hit with an incendiary bomb could possibly work…burnt to the ground without impacting the corner shop,.

A pile of cleared rubble could work, as you suggest, could be the answer, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks again,

The bomb could have hit further down the road or alley (there are two possible directions),
the fire has spread and damaged the corner building so badly that it needed tearing down.

I was thinking something like this but weeds and stuff instead of regular lawn

Some broken bricks and rubble kicked aside by the short cut greedy pedestrians
is definitely an option.

I’d expect to see a street light - and maybe a bench next to it…a partial bus stop shelter even?

Mate, for whats its worth, I would be doing a build up of rubble sloping from that area all the way to the bomb pit, and a hint of grass effect on the edge of it, then road closure signs blocking the road area there.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, they’re much appreciated, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

I think another area of wasteland might look a bit too much like the area opposite (see image below).

Though the suggestion of a bench or bus shelter would be an interesting detail, I wonder what type of shelters would have been in use in a UK town/city in WW2, or would it have simply been a bus stop sign, :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks again,

Hi all,

Fixed the leaky drainage pipe in place today and started to weather it. As previously mentioned I’ve added this to hide a bit faux pas, a bad join in the brickwork,.

Noticed a few dark splashes in the close-ups, will need to cover them up,.

There’s still some weeds to be added.

Cheers,,
