Operation Savannah

I thought I would share my latest 1/72-scale project. ‘Operation Savannah’, Angola (1975), A South African Defence Force’s Eland 90 Mk.7 is passing an abandoned Angolan BTR-60PB.

Very nice scene Paul! This is a subject rarely seen, you’ve done great job with it. A breath of fresh air !

metalhead85,

Thanks for the compliment … much appreciated!
As you rightly say, this is rarely covered subject.
Having spent years focussing on the predictable
WW2 Panzers, I recently decided to explore some
of the post-war/modern themes.

I guess someone with greater knowledge of SADF
vehicles will be able to point out certain inaccuracies
with my model, but with little in the way of reliable
references, this was the best I could achieve.

Very interesting subjects there Paul- and some nice staging too with the Eland crew looking at the knocked out BTR. Great camo scheme on the BTR too.

I only have one book on the Angola War and one from Osprey about the Rhodesian light infantry; I have a two figure set from Bravo- 6 of the Selous Scouts and the Oliphant tank from Hobby Boss, that’s the extent of my South African subject matter. I do like rare subjects, it’s a nice break from the more popular subjects in the hobby.

Again, thanks for the positive comments.
I always try to pose my figures so that they are interacting with the particular scene. Given that the Eland is passing the abandoned BTR, it seemed sensible that the crew would be at least taking notice of the vehicle (Rather than simply looking forwards).
In terms of the SADF as a theme, the only other item I have is a set of white-metal Selous Scouts (in 1/72 scale), for which I have yet to find a suitable scenario. I am hoping that someone might release other small-scale kits on the Border Wars theme in the near future.

A final thought … if anyone is interested in acquiring this particular kit of the Eland 90, it is available from Osiris Models (in the UK). Unfortunately, the company is due to close, so any orders need to be made (for this and any other items in the range) by Tuesday 2nd September.
