P-40E/N wheel set diamond tread, open spoke wheel True Details | No. 48055 | 1:48

Sweet & simple … Are these the 30 inch or smaller 27 inch, light weight, wheels for the P-40N ? My understanding is the N used 27 inch light weight rim/ tire combo . The E used 30 inch. Found a set by another maker , out of Canada, but they want $25 for shipping!! YGTBSM!!! US or Canadian that is BOHICA …with no Vaseline!

These are the light-weight 27" wheels, so only correct for the -N model P-40.
Cheers
Doug

Thanks. Ordered up a set today . $9 with shipping. Beats the hell outa $5 + $25 shipping!!! (so much for Canucks being kind and polite. BOHICA.)

My wheels finally landed. Should have been here yesterday but one of those fancy new Tesla semi trucks caught fire on the interstate between San Fransico and Reno and the burning batteries had the freeway shut down all day. Just using the Mark 1, Mod.0 eyeball the True Detail wheels do look a smidge smaller. Checking measurements (without a micrometer) the Hasegawa (grey) stock wheels are .6 inch dia., the rim, .35 inch, cross the tread, .25. The True Detail wheels are .55, rim, .35, cross tread, .2. SOOOO … If Hasegawa got things right I’d say the TD wheels are the 27 inch light weight ones. My math skills aren’t up to trying to figure out conversions from 1/1 to 1/48. (Numbers over 23, I run out of things to count on.)

Those are the same ones I have for my P-40N. But…
I have have this other set as well. Both have diamond tread.

The P-40E-M set have covered wheels,
Both sets have tires that are the same width and diameter, My micrometer battery is dead as well from reloading these past few weeks, but I used an old fashioned metal ruler and the wheels measure 9mm across on both sets. I don’t know if the diameter is correct or not, but I want diamond tread tires and covered wheels. As near as I can tell.

Another plane from the same squadron definitely hwas the covered wheels.

In fact, rtwo of them do.

So, correct or not I’ll go with the covered ones.

I have the decal set for Geronimo (+ 2X RAAF birds … errr … kites) on the sheet I got for the 80th FG P-40N. If you are interested, let me know. As far as I can tell the Ns were the only variant to get the 27inch wheels (also first batch (N-5 ) had only 2 .50 cals per wing. to save weight to improve high altitude performance. ) Later Ns went back to 6X .50s , not sure if they still got the small tires. E-M should have the “standard” 30 inch tires.Look like the rims were same size for E-Ns (B-C-D?) Most photos I’ve seen show the E-Ms with the covers (same for B-C-Ds)

I do appreciate the offer, but I happened upon a set of decals for a P-51 that had both Indian emblems on it, so I purchased it. The kit only had one embem and the colors were way off.

I also purchased a separate P-40 set just to get some appropriate stenciling. The P-40N I’m building has an interesting paint scheme - no one knows exactly what color it was but it was meant to blend in with the coral on the island. I will probably go with the same sand I paint modern US military vehicles with. But what is more interesting is that they masked over the stenciling before painting, leaving rectangles of green with stenciling all over the plane.

I also purchased separate exhaust stacks, vacu-formed canopies, a resin cockpit, a more appropriately shaped spinner, and an accurate tail. I will probably not use the tail piece. It captured the look of fabric very well, but I think the splicing job is an invitation for disaster. Besides, I have an old trick to make fabric surfaces that I may use.

Oh, and of course the six brass MGs.

If you can use that tail let me know.

Thanks. I Have a C ( new molds airfix kit from a few years back) , a Hasegawa E, Fat tailed K (hasegawa) and N. E is a captured one at IJA Akeno Fighter School, K is 23d FG in China, 1944, with M10 rocket tubes. N is from the Burma Banshees in India Might get an F and do it as a Free French bird. As for the color for the Central Pacific, Eduard’s P-39Q kit has an option for the same scheme. They reference Mr Color “flesh” and a 50/50 mix of blue and white. I’m thinking the top was 49 Tan. Bottom… Dupont made a RAF Equivalent for Lend Lease stuff that was a light blue. ‘Course being in “Navy Country” they may have Midnight Requisitioned Navy’s dark blue and white and mixed there own. (not sure what USN’ specs were at the time.) Top might have been the 49 Sand (AAC stock) toned down with white . Figure on an island in the middle of nowhere they didnt go down to Home Depot and get a couple cans of rustoleum.

Thanks. That flesh is a God awful color though.
This makes for a very interesting read for a number of reasons:

I saw something on the build of the Eduard or Arma P-39 kit using that “flesh”. It actually looks right, in the jar. (should have saved the info on it) Also, I found out that AK’s #d Gen line has the USAAC 49 sand … Buy WWII USAAF Aircraft Colors Vol.1 online for11,00€ | AK-Interactive Buy Nº13 DESERT SAND (FS30279) - AFV online for2,75€ | AK-Interactive I’ll look around the next few days and see if Ican find the build article. (Gonna be busy the next couple days with the big rib cook off here. Got 20 rib cooking teams and I need tofigure out whos to try. Dangerous job but some one has to do it! )
