Evolution Miniatures released a big set of Panzergrenadiers from Kharkov. The box art states "Part 1", so I would guess more sets in this series are planned.
I think I’ve asked this before, so sorry for the duplicate question. But I can’t find the previous thread. Germans in parkas like this are often labelled Kharkov. I’m assuming this was SS kit. Was it SS kit only? And was it only around during that one winter '42-'43?
Very nice set! The one that stands out to me is the guy huddled on the back; he looks cold, miserable, and war-weary; probably missing home and wondering when this ordeal will be over. I like when sculptors capture a bit of emotion in their poses, etc.
Phil,
Yes, it was SS kit only. It is usually labelled as the “Kharkov Parka” because that was where it was first photographed in wear in significant numbers. In fact, it’s nothing to do with Kharkov, it was the SS independent take on a Winter combat uniform. By the second winter in the East, the Heer was issuing it’s troops with the padded Mouse Grey reversible to white two piece ensemble. The SS camouflaged version of this was supposed to supercede the “Kharkov Parka”, but never actually did, the parka continuing to be worn until the end of the war. Photos taken in the “Spring Awakening” (Platensee) Offensive in 1945 still show it being worn. Interestingly, part of the reasoning behind replacement was that the SS developed parka made the wearer too hot - not something you would think of as a major concern in Russia!
