Photo Etch tool suggestions

Hey folks, I am hoping for suggestions for a versatile photo etch tool. I work mainly with 1/35 scale armour. I have read previous threads and The Bug keeps being mentioned, but it appears out of stock everywhere. I don’t mind investing in a good quality tool, but am hoping for one that will handle a variety of sizes. I have seen the Dspiae also comes up regularly..any opinions?

Thanks!

I have the Dspiae but haven’t had much chance to use it as I haven’t built my PE-intensive kits yet, but it appears to fill every need. Certainly well-made and presented.

I have a Bug but found it was no use on long strips that needed folding or certain shapes just would not settle safely.

I just googled “The Bug tool” to see what it looks like - and realized it’s very similar to the one I have, which is from a chinese brand lol.

All these tools work on a similar principle, there’s nothing technically complicated about them, which is why there are so many chinese copies. DSPIAE offers at least two formats. Choose the format that best suits your scale and subject matter. How often do you work with large parts like track hangers or elements of an open combat turret?

Tip: if you’re buying in offline store, check how well the screw secures the clamping plate.

Thanks Arthur! Are you happy with the JAS? I am concerned about buying a Chinese knockoff, as it seems a bit of a “crap shoot” as far as quality goes. Everyone says the Dspiae is solid as a rock. I am fairly new to the game, most of the PE parts I am running across are fairly small. The razorblade/straightedge method isn’t working out for me, so I am hoping a proper tool will help…

Back in my day the hold and fold speed 5 was the one everybody liked. I have one and the size is just about perfect for fenders and the shapes on top are supposed to help with Sherman light guards.

I also have the small DSPIAE and it is my go to for most smaller etch as it is easier to handle and manouver.

Do not buy cheap ones as the “fingers” can bend over time and you will loose grip. My hold and fold is going strong for about 15 years now, no bending or breaking (but it could use a clean).

So look at the longest thing you need to bend (fender, ship railing) and get a tool for that size. Smaller bends can be done with pliers (Xuron, Tritool) or with flat tweezers (the kind women use to pluck eyebrows work really well).

Yes, The Small Shop tool looks like a beauty, but it seems they are sold out at present of every model. I will email them or try and find one on Ebay. Thanks!

The large Dspiae’s cost was sort of a non-issue for me as my wife bought it for me for Christmas. We both teach and make about the same money so I can pretend it cost her, not both of us. Makes buying kits and supplies easier when I can con her into doing it for me.

The Mk 1 steel ruler and single-side razor blade works really well!

Hi Clint,
The Small Shop ceased operations about two years ago. Don’t bother looking for their products, they are long gone. I have 4 different PE bending tools, including a Bug and an 8 inch DSPIAE. The Bug is my default folding tool because it handles most sized PE parts, it’s easy to maneuver, and it’s convenient to keep on the bench.
I have most of the tools that DSPIAE produces and I am very satisfied with all of them. DSPIAE is manufactured to the highest quality. They are an excellent line, and not “cheap Chinese knock-offs”. You can buy DSPIAE tools with confidence.
All of that said, buy the DSPIAE Bug - sized folding tool. You will be very happy with it.
