Pier 51

I made a driver for the 1st DUKW I’ll have to russel up another one for the second truck and some bods sitting on the back. Is this layout reasonable?

Mate, I do not think you can go wrong with that composition… it has balance with static and movement and the feeling that the tide is on the ebb …. once that is combined with the quayside action with figures and more impression of their movement … well, you have an award winner me thinks !!

Hi Johmmy, thanks for the feedback, appreciated. My only regret is that I didn’t have the depth of base to add the railway wagons at the back as I origionally planned. However, I have sufficient room on the display table to add the track on a raised bed to butt up against what’s there now. That’s something i’ll think about for the future. In the mean time i’ll work on getting the various active elements completed and added. Stay well. Al

Sliced railway wagons? One rail, the wheels on the rail and whatever depth remains inwards from the side of the wagon? Could have a side door open to show the wagon stacked roof high with cargo …

You definately like the razor saw :joy: :+1: . I’ve seen some stunning models done that way but I doubt if I’d have the skill. I have about 4 inches to play with space wise which would accommodate a track, wagons and add a bit more depth to the scene and balance it a bit more. I purchased the board more tank 20 years ago based on the width of a door, so I can actually get it in and out. :joy: I’ll see what I can come up with..

I do like the dio as it turns out. The only thing I wonder: would there be any personnel aboard the landing craft while it is lying on the harbour bottom?

Divers?

Couldn’t resist the temptation

That could be the case if there was any water above the craft in question… As it is now I think they would look quite ridiculous :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think one or two personnel in the boats is a problem, after all they are designed to be beached with 20 plus troops on board. The crew in the LCPL are working on the engine and the boat will be lashed to the dock as beached it would tilt, same with the LCVP. In general in the UK the Tyde rises and falls twice a day so beached boats are common, it’s just we don’t tend to think of them that way. That was my thinking anyway.

If it works out to a reasonable standard it may make it’s way to the local maritime museum. I did that with my 1st Somme dio, a new home on lone. Who knows. Getting things in/out is always an issue. We are just getting the new house finally sorted and SWMBO has been making comments about ‘Oh, thats a nice house for sale’ :joy: :joy:

As long as you have thought about it, it is okay :+1: It was only a thought…

An officer or NCO can always find work for the soldiers/sailors …

In for a penny! I’ve built a couple of raised boxes out of balsa to deepen the rear of the dio. I can add the rail track and another small building or pillbox. Some telegraph poles will add some hight to that end and free up a little more space for the players on the key.

I’ll have to build a separte section to extend the ramp exit a bit, but the overall effect should be to give it more depth and balance..

Looking at the dio in reverse I seemed better that the track endtered the scene from the Lighthouse end. The addition of the extra space opens up a few more possibilities. As well as having the GIs waiting to board I had thought of a line of British In fantry moving through the background on their way to embarkation. Whilst I liked the concept to the pillbox it really blocked that end so just the frontage of a storage building will probably work better. Awaiting for the hard surface to arrive whilst getting on slowly with other things.

Hi Folks,

Apologies for not adding to this recently. Serious flu in October/November that lead to pheumonia and a 23 day hospital stay. Came out just before Christmas absolutely drained and pumped full of antibiotics. On the mend and hope to return soon. :+1:
