Poor Quality Kit = Very Enjoyable Experience

Ever have one of those kits that was so bad that it ended up being quite an enjoyable build?

I’m currently building the Hobby Boss A-10C and it is so fun. This is my first kit with real issues, such as poor general fitment, incomplete molding on some edges and corners and a lot of flash and over molding in others.

I’ve really been enjoying test fitting, reworking, test fitting reworking, spru goo’ing, puttying, rescribing etc etc. All things I’ve never had to do at this continuous level.

I’m just kinda surprised by this turn of events, enough so that I’m thinking of getting another Hobby Boss something just to play some more.

Just me or any of you have a similar experience?

When you can shake the box and have a completed kit spill out, where was the fun?
AEF Designs Sho’t Kal - worst resin kit I ever built, and one of the most rewarding.

Absolutely – isn’t this what’s best about model-making? Overcoming challenges, improving on what’s provided. So much talk about the best/most accurate kit – no problem if that’s the goal, but after 100+ builds I don’t think there’s a single one that I built totally OOB. Some only needed very minor additions, but honestly I think I’d fall asleep if I ever built a kit that didn’t need any improvement.

It’s a Zen thing - the joy of fixing is greater than the joy of not having to fix ….

masochism is not only related to s-e-x

The reward of winning against difficulties can be quite significant

Don’t go down that road. It seems to annoy some people. On second thought…
