Put a Tiger in Your Tank! - Tiger Build Thread

@PsiFox, Mark, thank you for the details. A+++

I’ll order a set of them from US Amazon.

In addition to applying CA & Epoxy, I think these will be invaluable on a pin vise to making small divits/guide holes for the small drill bits. I’ve been using a divider but it’s big and too clucky to be accurate pricking the end of an MG34 to drill out. Looks like the needles :sewing_needle: will have the potential to be used as a light scriber for adding fine line work on panels too.

I recall selling my copies of this kit in the 1990’s for $5 to $10 each to clear out shelf space.

Pulled the trigger on fleabay for $29.99 plus shipping.

Thanks to a tip from @Gil was able to stay under $50 with shipping. Much appreciated Gil!

After the 35056 early Tiger 1 wraps, this new old kit can go in the que, probably sometime next winter. I have to finish some of the ten activate projects before starting another. Can only invoke Advanced Model Rule #429 so many times…wink

@Elefant6 Michael and fellow King Tiger enthusiasts, if there’s an KT that you’re familiar with that would be a good subject please let me know. I’m not much of a “specific tank” modeler and am “allergic to doing research”, willing to attempt a cool detail or two like alternative stowed tow cables, jerry cans etc. I tend to favorite subjects WITH Zimmerit on older model kits when possible.

Thank you

Checking contacts didn’t turn up any additional old Tamiya King Tiger kits from the 1970’s. However, two Tamiya King Tiger’s from 1993 & 2002 did turn up.

Wade I have both of those King tiger kits. One in stash other was partially built 30 years ago and sitting in my closet some where. VBG. man we are all nuts! But I love it.

After briefly considering not painting this model decided to get a base coat of Mr Surfacer Mahogany on the old Tiger 1 today.

Two small PE parts came loose during painting but both were recovered.

Hopefully, after curing for a few days color coat will go on.

Sprayed colors today, hoping to beat the campaign’s one week deadline.

Stay tune as much idiocy and corner cutting with a heat lamp will ensue in an attempt to wrap this one in time.

Kali says she isn’t concerned and we should get back to the Panther builds…

What a morning :sunrise_over_mountains:

Installed wheels, got to here and discovered…

…D5 was missing   :pensive:

After two hours to searching found the missing parts pushed to the back of a storage shelf.

With the wheels on and turret test fitted the 1970 vintage Tamiya Tiger 1 is finally starting to move towards finish line.

Hope to paint tools, weather tracks and install later today.

The collection of fragile detail parts broken so far…

Wade if you need another Tamiya old Tiger 1 I have one I could send you. It might be good for a blown up one though. VBG

Randy! Thank you for having me covered on that! I will keep that in mind if something else comes up.

Kali cat said six hours at the workbench was the limit for today. In summary, we accomplished the following.

Installed wheels
Installed one track
Painted tools

…or in this case expedited shipping, I’m hoping…

The track is exactly one link too short.

The single spare link remaining was used to fit the other track. The other spares are on the side of the turret.

After a manic helter-skelter search, found a couple of SK-2(full set)/SK-5(spares for turret) Model-Kasten sets available worldwide. One was even fairly close at M&Models.com which was immediately ordered with expedited shipping.

So today, turned attention to sourcing figures. Found three plastic Tamiya figure from 1989 or before that met criteria for Great Ones Campaign plus some old 80’s era resin heads.

Hopefully, a figure will emerge while waiting on the spare track links to arrive and doing a wash on the model tomorrow.

Word of :warning: :warning: :warning: warning the figure painting will get ugly…fast

…to hideous

  :joy: :joy_cat:

Oh the five losers, I posted were my best figure painting efforts from over the last ~35 years. The zombie with the shell casing is from a Panther diorama from the 1980’s.

This Tiger will get an all new custom modified & painted loser of its own for the campaign!

Such adversity as man eating carpet must be over come.

Found his arm, the carpet monster ate the rest of him!

One does what one has to do for campaign requirements. Today’s trials and tribulations modifying one figure and painting him.

This is the stock pose of the figure selected.

The right arm was repositioned lower. The left arm replaced with one that had the sleeve rolled up.

The figure was painted RAL 1001 using Floquil Military Color Panzer Interior Buff also know as Elfenbein, Ivory or Beige. Various washes were applied for skin tones & uniform, small details painted & drybrushed.

With five hours invested, calling this a good faith effort to meet the technical requirements of modifying and painting a figure for the campaign.

That’s all I have for today. Hopefully, the track links arrive tomorrow.

OK I get that you’re going for the nostalgic 70’s-80’s thing so that figure’s ideal – is he going to be installed as Tamiya intended i.e. in the cupola? I think the reason he has no abdomen & bonsai legs is because he was designed to stand on a tab inside the turret (?) - whatever, his lower parts should never be seen in public. And hey you did a reasonable paint job, if I squint thru my less-perfect eye from the other side of the room he looks perfect :face_with_hand_over_mouth: :upside_down_face: :slightly_smiling_face:

Tim, that makes perfect sense! I thought he looked “dimensionaly challenged”. My painted figures always degrade the model. So he’ll get tossed in with the other zombies after a few more pictures are taken with the finished model.

Broke the model again and lost one of S-mine launchers. If it doesn’t turn up, will have to scratch a replacement. All but one S-mine launcher has broken. Going to have a lot of detail repairs to do.

Oil wash day…

Hope to drybrush tomorrow…

…and to make that possible the old Death Ray heat lamp that melted a Dragon T-34/85 is back in action :clapper:

The old heat lamp seems to make for
better pictures than the LED lights.

I wasn’t going to say anything, but if you’re actually going to rework the mine launchers, I will mention this: you’ve wired them up wrongly. There is no connection at the back.

See The S mine system
