what about squeezing all the putty into a sealable jar and getting rid of the leaky tube altogether?

true I wonder if there is a jar system that allows you to easily pull all the air out. Maybe a small one-way check valve in the lid and a small hand pump similar to what I had back in the day with the bad guy from Stretch Armstrong (I think he was called Vac Man)

For the cost of a set-up to save my putty tubes from going solid,
either from external air/humidity or internal chemistry,
I could afford to buy new putty tubes,
or
switch to putties that can be un-hardened (see post by Armor_Buff above).

Sorry to be late, but it here is my USEFUL tip : I have both of them ( Squadron Green Putty and Deluxe Perfect Plastic Putty ) into plastic cup with water. I have to check water level every month or replace it ( after soaked with grime ).
With Squadron Green Putty water mixes a bit and that’s not bad.
