Hello
I’m just finishing work on the Mil Mi-4 helicopter model, specifically its wreck. The entire helicopter will be covered in rust. I am asking for help with the main rotor and blades because I don’t know if I can also cover them with rust or just dust.
Thank you for Your help
Christopher
Actually, most of it will not rust as it is mostly made out of aluminum alloys. It will just sort of tarnish and get really dull with heavily weathered paint. All the glass and soft/cloth items would most likely be gone as well.
When aluminum oxidizes, it will get a powder like white/gray surface over the bare metal. Similar texture to oxidation/rust on a ferrous metal, but a different color.
In fact early Mil Mi-4 had plywood rotor blades, later production batches/variants had constant-chord all-metal blades. Chinese Z-5 ones built at Harbin were all built with plywood blades, so should be no issues with rust for wooden blades then eh?
And we still need a paint that easily represents this.
Which is why they’re rarely seen on wrecks in Afghanistan. They will scavenge anything that burns, including trash, to make chai and cook meals.
