Question for IJN Kaga aircraft carrier experts

Hello gentlemen,

the IJN Kaga aircraft carrier does show a huge door at the rear boat deck. AI told me this is an additional room for servicing and repairing the pinnaces and boats and for stowage. But it can not be that big as the rear hangar elevator is not too far behind this door. Or does this door lead into the aircraft servicing hangar? There are some rare pictures which show the door open but not the room behind. Can anyone contribute informations about the size and look of this room as I want to show the door open when I will build this carrier once in the future?

That photo appears to be when Kaga was in her original fit with three flight decks, prior to her mid 1930’s rebuild

That opening looks to lead to her lower hangar/flight deck.

Thanks for your input Carlos,

I´ve seen this pictures already and are still thinking about if that door leads directly to the aircraft hangar or not. If there was actually a separate service and storage room for the smaller boats this room was actually not very wide as the elevator is just a few meters behind. See the drawing below

Cheers

Thomas

Loading gate to load supplies (bombs, torpedoes, whatever)?
Load new aircraft into the hangars?

What is the deck just aft of the door used for?

I do not think it was intended for loading aircraft into the hangar. If it was no closed up room for storaging and servicing it might just be for getting in quickly fresh air if necessary to remove fuel gases

Would that purpose imply an open view into the lower hangar?

Of course not, its just guesswork of mine :man_shrugging:
