Yes, I know it’s a ship, not armour, but my question relates to what the Marines shoehorned into the Iwo Jima class.
Unlike later LHA and LHD classes, the LPH didn’t have a well deck, so it wouldn’t have been able to accommodate and deploy Tanks or Amtracs (or anything else of similar size). Was the LPH purely a troop carrier, or did they also accommodate light vehicles such as Jeeps and light artillery as a normal part of their load? (i.e. stuff small enough to be airlifted in, or under, the embarked helicopters)?

LPH are Landing platform helicopter. Aircraft carrier of helos and Harriers and not jets like their big brother. Any vehicle equipment would be for moving aircraft around.

The LPH would be part of an Amphibious Readiness Group, with accompanying LSTs, LSDs, etc. that carried the Amtracs, armor, and other heavy equipment of the MAU/MEU. Look at some of the groups that deployed in that era (70’s/80’s) to see what was carried where. The 22nd MAU that went to Grenada and Beirut in late 1983 would be a good example.
