A tombstone showing the chainmail armor worn by some.

I somehow doubt the armour depicted on the tombstone of T. Calidius Severus is supposed to be chainmail (Lorica hamata), it could be scale armour (Lorica squamata) or even a quilted linen garment (loricae linteae?) worn under either of the above, with pteruges attached to the lower edge.
