Recommendations for AI photo enhancement?

I’m mostly interested in Cold War armor and pictures from that era are generally low quality so I’m looking for a tool to enhance my own pictures and ones I find online and I’m looking for recommendations.

I’ve used up my 10 free on letsenhance .io but looks the best so far.

Results from Krea not so good.

The original from CAT '89 at Bergen-Hohne

And Krea confusing Nomex with skin and wiping out detail.

I’m not sure what you are trying to do by having AI do the photo enhancement. I can do the same in a photoshop-type program and get better-looking pictures in a few seconds.

I’m looking to upscale, remove shadows and enhance detail.

Are you using online or off the shelf software?

I use off the shelf software, mainly Photo App and PowerPoint. They work well enough for me.

Photoshop has always been my go-to program, but ChatGTP has given me great results, once you work out the nuances.

I decided to give it a whirl. I uploaded your original image into ChatGTP, then told it to improve photo quality and this is the result… Oh yeah, I also got rid of the ‘leg’ sticking out the rear

I’d like to see the same photo worked on by you using ChatGPT and the Gino using PowerPoint. Perhaps a video so we can see the elapsed time.
“A few seconds” is the time to meet or beat.

OK I kinda get why you’d want to enhance an original image, I’m just not sure why you’d trust AI to correctly enhance it? If it’s for the purposes of better seeing details, surely the more enlightening alternative would be to find a better original image - which AI could help searching for. In the M113A1 example, the original looks good enough to me – and all Edro’s ChatGTP did was make it darker and remove the guy on the ramp…what was the point?

i use it to remove people and objects from photos to make them look more appealing. It doesn;t always have to do with models.

I used paint to clean this up but I overlooked a portion of it. I can assure you it took more than a few seconds.
I"ll try to find the original but it may be lost.

For fun I asked ChatGPT to remove Sam from the photo. 12 seconds later:

If Powerpoint can do that in a few seconds I’ll turn in my Powerpoint Ranger Tab.

How about Iraq a few years later?

OK I kinda get that too but I’m still asking for what purpose? Appealing to whom? If for oneself, of course I have no problem, but if it’s for public consumption call me old fashioned but I’d rather show the original warts & all. By all means with better contrast/lightness, even cropping, but once you start altering elements within the final image it’s no longer reality & I don’t see the point apart from what? Deception?

Maybe I should qualify – I’ve “enhanced” my own dio photos to remove or disguise bits I didn’t want or need showing. I’d claim that’s an entirely different matter, because the original scene was itself a constructed illusion i.e. attempting to replicate a reality. And a further qualification about that – I don’t think I’ve ever enhanced an element I’d actually built, because that would be itself a deception. I’m talking about backgrounds that didn’t work.

In the case of the above photo, it was to remove a goofy looking Iraqi Shop owner frmthe photo. You can just see his white pant leg and black shoe in the first photo. If you enlarge it you can see the fuzziness around Sam’s shoulder, and the distorted paint on the wall. Normal size it looks fine. Again, I’d love to see anyone dothat in a few seconds. IT took me several minutes, and doesn’t look perfect. But “close enough” as some folks like to say.
Now AI removing Sam? That was just for fun on here.
Changing the uniform? Again, I’d like to see anyone do that “in a few seconds.”

There does not have to be a point to everything in life.. Sometimes it’s just fun to fool around.

OK whatever floats your boat, certainly it’s impressive if we’re only talking about AI vs antiquated enhancement tools

I can’t tell you anything about powerpoint, because I’ve never used it. But I am very familiar with Photoshop. I have used it for at least ten years. I will admit that I don’t currently use the latest version. I’m still using CS5 and a couple of plug ins. For the 113 image, (Or is that the M106 Mortar version?) Photoshop is completely capable of enhancing an image and removing a leg. It would take me a little more time using photoshop to remove the leg, because you would need to manually paint it out and replace the area with the background, which wouldn’t be too difficult. I’ve recently discovered AI as a tool to improve, enhance or completely change a photograph. For the M113 image, all i did was tell the AI to ‘improve the quality of the photo and remove the leg sticking out the back of the vehicle’ and that is the image it spat out, as quickly as it took to type those words. So there is a speed difference. But what I am discovering with AI is you can do a lot more with it, which would be time consuming with Photoshop. On the flip side, AI is only as good as how you describe something and it translates it. You can spend a lot of time trying to describe a very particular thing and AI not ‘getting it’.

The point I was making wasn’t to trust a program, it was to show that the program is a capable tool for the purpose the OP was trying to accomplish. In this case, all I told the AI to do was ‘improve the quality’ of the image. And technically it did. The side note was that it chose to darken the image because my prompt was vague. I could have given it a more comprehensive description of the changes I wanted, and it could produce pretty good results. Removing the leg was an aesthetic decision (because it really distracts from the image). The AI understood that and did it.

You’re making a different argument which is more likely to involve moral values. An ‘enhanced’ photo of a car for sale would certainly qualify as deception as the purpose there was to make the car look better to ‘lure in prospective buyers’. The OP was simply asking to improve an image. It would be better if there was a better original picture, but what if one doesn’t exist? AI has that capability and it’s easy.

The only thing I’m after is enhancing & upscaling an image so I can discern details that aren’t clear for the purpose of reproducing. I’m not asking AI to take out a person or leg.

Same Belgian M113 based mortar carrier in use until the early 1990’s. I can’t ask someone to go back and get a better picture.
