Reference Books on Tiger I

Hello All,

Returning to the hobby after a break of many years. I was hoping someone could provide the titles of some good reference books on the Tiger I. I see a lot out there and not sure what’s quality info.

Any help is much appreciated.

Depends on what you want. Technical information or operational history?
For technical details, Germany’s Tiger Tanks D.W. to Tiger I : Design, Production & Modifications by Thomas L. Jentz, published by Schiffer.
For a more visual guide and although an old reference, I like Achtung Panzer Vol. 6 (out of print, if you can get it second hand).

For the operational history, the most complete are the two volumes of Wolfgang Schneider’s Tigers in Combat, first for Heer units and second for Waffen SS

Also worth a look Volker Ruff’s three volumes on sPz Abt. 501, 502 and 503.

Thomas Anderson book on Tiger I has a bit of everything and is usually interesting.

I can not remember anything better at this moment -but I may be missing something

Welcome to the forum @qvbrun

Are you looking for technical & history reference or model detailing references?

History, technical and some modeling these Jentz books are excellent.

Model building focused these two are outstanding.

If I could only have one book for model building Tiger’s, Achtung #6 Tiger would be my choice and I have a lot of Tiger 1 books.

This thread various-armor-books-for-sale has Achtung #6 for sale at a fair price. I’ve bought several books from seller, he’s A+.

Another reference worth knowing about is David Byrden’s Tiger site. It has a lot of good info including info about various 1/35 kits.

I would not include it in my recommendations (although I may be wrong) and even less at this price

Welcome to Armorama! Also good is Spielberger’s Tigers I and II. Also, there is a Tigers In Combat 3.

Depending on what you are after, there’s also the Haynes Owner’s Handbook, which basically majors on 134 in the Tank Museum. It does contain a lot of information and good pictures.

Trojca’s three volume set on the Tiger 1 is actually pretty good. It’s a good combination of technical details and unit histories. A bit hard to read in places and I don’t really like how the books are organized, and some of the artwork can be a bit suspect, but the information is accurate based on what I’ve read so far (still haven’t worked my way through the 3rd volume). I would balance these books with a few others like Jentz’s technical volume and Schneider’s Tigers in Combat to cross-reference information.
