To be fair to our friends across the pond, the first carrier landing under (at least partial) jet power occurred on 6th November 1945 when a Ryan FR-1 Fireball suffered a loss of power on it’s primary Wright R-1820 radial engine on final approach to the carrier Wake Island and the pilot was able to start the auxiliary General Electric I-16 (J-31) turbojet to compensate, resulting in a safe landing but ending up in the barrier despite catching the last wire. Normal operations mandated take-off and landing using the piston engine only, although in testing three take-offs were made using both engines.
