Remembering Bastogne

80 years ago today General George S. Patton and the Third Army broke through the German lines to relieve the 101st Airborne. The 4th Armor arrived the next day and began evacuating the wounded. Fighting continued till January 6th. All told, 341 killed, 1,691 wounded, and 516 missing. For those of us who lost someone then today is a time of remembering.

I’ve always liked Joe Toye’s quote:

Toye : How do I feel about being rescued by Patton? Well I’d feel pretty peachy, except for one thing. We didn’t need to be fin’ rescued by Patton!*
