I would test spray something if you add the Vallejo thinner to the Tamiya x-22 and see how it acts. You’ll probably be fine…but sometimes brands don’t always play nice with each other.
It’s usually best to use Tamiya thinner with Tamiya paints, Vallejo thinner with Vallejo paints and so on
Actually, I don’t think you would get very good results with Vallejo thinner and Tamiya paint. You’re guaranteeing tip dry. The best thinner for all Tamiya paints is actually Mr. Color Leveling Thinner.
yeah … i can see the logic in that. I actually purchased a small bottle of Vallejo clear gloss since I have so much of the Vallejo thinner. I’m just going to hold on to the Tamiya gloss. At some point I will get some of their thinner. Anyway, this will be a chance to get some experience with different brands. When I end up trying the Tamiya brand I can compare. So far I’ve been using Testors thinner with Revell paint and it seems to be working fine. Which is why I figured the Vallejo would be okay. I’m glad I asked!
Mr. Color Leveling thinner. Noted. I’ve heard it mentioned before.
Curious; Is Mr. Color brand “related” to Tamiya somehow? Or are they just an anomaly? (When it comes to sticking with same brands and all that)
Tamiya paint is not a true acrylic paint. It is a hybrid. If you note there is a Tamiya acrylic thinner and a Laquear thinner. I prefer the yellow capped Tamiya laquear thinner for spraying. If I am not mistakes Mr. Color is also a laquear based thinner so it would work well with Tamiya paint.
The Mr. Color brand and Tamiya are two separate entities. Mr. Color paint and thinner are lacquers. Tamiya, as Top @TopSmith states, is not a true water based acrylic. Open it and take a sniff. That’s not water. Tamiya paints thin best with lacquer thinner, and the best model-purposed lacquer thinner on the market is Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. Using Tamiya with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner puts you so far ahead of the curve, you’re in a whole different ball park. No tip dry. No spit. No spatter. No runs. No orange peel. Just perfect airbrushing.
