Rfm m109A7

Started this a few days ago. The lower hull and running gear have been painted NATO green. Tracks have also been assembled but not yet painted. Will do them while waiting on the wash on the lower hull, etc. to dry. No photos as they are not that interesting.

The turret has also been assembled. Spent about 5 hours today putting all the PE fittings that hold the tools and assembling the two stowage baskets which require 8 pieces of PE each. More PE than I really care to deal with but they do look good. That and there is no plastic option.

Overall the kit goes together nicely and I have not run into any problems thus far. In addition to the PE there are lots of tiny plastic pieces, making this a somewhat fiddly build.

Question, see photo below.

I’ve not seen it on any photos that I have found of the actual vehicle.

That is the CIP on the front slope. It is similar to the ones on the front turret of an Abrams and shows up as a cold square in night vision optics.

You can see one with the common “This Side Off” label below on one of the test howitzers. There is also one visible on the side of the turret.

Does it fold down? There doesn’t seem to be any hinges as done in the kit.

Looks like there are two quick release pins attached to the panel pull them out the panel comes off and can be stowed away maybe just taking a guess.

^ Exactly how it works. A couple pins and it comes off.

Minor update. Lower hull complete and tracks test fitted. They’ll be painted later today. Upper hull also attached. They’ll interior of the rear door can be nicely detailed but there is no interior detail for the rear compartment. Gusss they just needed to fill out the PE fret and get the parts count up.

The sag is really well executed.

In spite of what I’ve said about its inaccuracies, you’re doing a great job on it.

Yeah. I’m not as intimately familiar with the real deal as you and wouldn’t have known better but for your input. I just shrug, eh, no kit is perfect. I do like to hear from those who actually served on/with the subject in question though. So many of the things seem simple enough one wonders why they overlook/ignore them.

No issue. Just lots of PE and small parts.

Started painting the rest of this beast. I like the green. However, I haven’t done a NATOflage in a while so I’m also considering that option. What say ye, green or NATO.

As an aside the gun travel lock is a gem. Nineteen pieces in that assembly including one piece of PE.

Man, that looks really sharp !

It looks really good in the overall green. I don’t think I have seen any M109A7s in NATO camo either, just green and sand.
