RFM M4A3 - inaccuracies?

Hey everyone,

I want to build an accurate Korean War version of this Sherman so asking any experts about the issues with the RFM kit.

I’m already aware of the following:

  • need to add the infantry phone and the first aid kit;
  • replace the loader’s hatch springs

There also seems to be an issue with either the tow hooks or the lifting rings but I don’t have any details on this - anyone?

This might help with your questions- M4A3(76)W Shermans

Yes, I’m aware of this website. I wanted to see if anyone has identified anything else specific?

RFM has released several M4A3 kits. Assuming you might be working on either the Korean War release or the one of the earlier releases and you want to build it into a Korean version?

There are many RFM M4A3 build blogs, build videos, and reviews all over the internet of the different versions. If you’re working on the Korean version I don’t know that I’ve seen a review or build of that specific version of the RFM kit.

@Shermaniac I got the kit with interior, number 5042. I don’t really care about how close the interior is, but want to get the outside 100%.
Do you have any info or links to the builds that show corrections? I’ve read a few and none of them are very specific.

A lot depends on which RFM kit you have. I reviewed the original M4A3E8 WW2 kit 5028 here: Armorama :: Rye Field Model 1:35 M4A3E8 Sherman Review and noted that the only things missing for a Korean War tank were the first-aid box and infantry phone. Your interior kit 5042 is the same WW2 version, with added interior, so also lacks the box and phone. The Korean War version 5049 has these two items in the kit. The lift rings on the front should be in the “outboard” position for a late-version as would be seen in Korea. They all have the later T-shaped “speed” shackles on the towing eyes, typical of very late WW2 and Korea.

Other than being complicated builds I don’t know of any inaccuracies that need fixing.

From reading Barkingdigger’s post, it sounds like you just have to remember to drill out the outboard holes for the lift rings and then source a phone and first aid box and you’ll be set to go. Does that full interior kit include markings suitable for Korea?

There are aftermarket decals a-plenty for Korea, so no problem if the kit ones are all WW2!
