My wife sure is a trooper. Getting up at 7am on a Sunday morning.
Wow that must have been fun. I have wanted to build the 1/87th Big Boy model. Does ant one make a detail set for it?
This is a video I like, you probably have already seen it.
I’ve seen several videos. That one is in the configuration we saw today with the two extra tenders in armor yellow. I think for the Revell kit the first thing you can do is shave of the handrails, add brass stanchions and handrails from wire. A few other brass bits here and there, like a generator, and a little plumbing. Those old kits really weren’t that bad. I built the orient express and the loco in that one was fairly well detailed.
If you want to detail it there is a CalScale kit specifically for the “Big Boy”. Lots of castings. It was at one time available in plastic as well as lost wax brass castings.
Greg,
Just did a quick search and it appears that CalScale no longer produces that set. Individual castings are still available but appear to be moving out of production. The same applies to the Cary line of castings.
Another source for 1/87 scale steam detail parts is Precision Scale Co. They are now located here in WA on the east side, Tri-Cites area. Their products are available by direct order but sometimes take awhile to come through. I have waited 3+ months to get some castings that I needed and which were out of stock at the time I ordered.

I sourced a part at Angelo Hobbies a few months ago for a guy, They have tons of old brass parts there, but you have to dig for them yourself, and they’re only somewhat organized.
A true old line shop!! Except for Skyway which is all plastic kit focused, and he is very good, there is nothing left in the Seattle area. Tough business w/low margins and our high real estate costs means all the shops have gone away.
