Rockets on a Rocket

Any thought on what rocket pods these are? Saw Matra mentioned somewhere. (Cessna -Reims A-172.)

I believe you are correct in that they are Matra rocket pods.

Irish Airforce?

Irish Air Corps. Reims Rockets

I don’t know the designation of the pods either other than they were Matra.

Edit: The photo of 243 with the rocket pods was for an airshow at Abbeyshrule airfield in 1982 after rocket firing had been discontinued. Actually I was at that airshow.

In fact 243 was an attrition replacement delivered in 1980. Probably too late to fire the rockets. It was also lost in a crash when a young Second Lieutenant tried something spectacular and lost control.

I’ve seen this Wiki page, but they don’t mention any 37mm 12-shot launcher…

There are old pilots. And there are bold pilots. But there are no old, bold pilots!

“rocket pods was for an airshow at Abbeyshrule airfield in 1982 after rocket firing had been discontinued” Discontinued rocket firing AT the airshows? They use to do live firing at the NAS Pt. Mugu airshow. Set up a target off the beach, at the end of the runway. F-14 would come in for a gun run with 20mm. F-4 would follow and hose off a Zuni rocket. Then , for the grand finale, an A-4 would come in ,drop a flare ,and GFOD! … and an F-14 would demo an AIM-9 'Winder. (I heard the reason they stopped doing this fun was NAS Oceana was having Press Day and had a bunch of reporters/camera guys up in an H-46 to get photos of the 'Winder demo. Scooter comes in, drops the flare. Tomcat comes in,launches the 'Winder. 'Winder says “Screw the flare. That helo looks a lot more fun!” No warhead , but even an inert missile slamming in to a helicopter … it wasn’t pretty. Navy said, “OK. No more of THAT.”

Hardly mention anything but the 155 pod.

Of a related nature … anybody know where I can find the Italeri Cessna 172 kit ( Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Italeri 2764 (2016) ) or the Irish decals from it? The usual suspects are No Joy.

Yes Stuff, those were the days. Health and Safety? What was that?

As for the kit and decals I don’t know.

Max decals did a sheet in 1/72

And I/48

But good luck finding any of them.

That, and finding them in the US… no one is shipping here these days. (already had 2 orders from Poland not make it through the blockade! I DIDNT vote for the dickwad!) Kit is scarce as Muslim swineherds too. Smithsonian Air & Space had story about an airshow at Mugu in the 50s. Tried launching an F-6F-5K (drone) … it took off and nose dived at the end of the runway. Fire Dept. went out to put the fire out. Fire engine fell on its side in an irrigation ditch. (base was and still is surrounded by lettuce fields.) Aircraft doing the missile demo (AIM-7 Sparrow?) is holding. His heater is malfunctioning and roasting him… (control tower thought he was being a baby but when he landed the control knobs on the instruments had started to melt!) He decided enough waiting , sonic boomed from behind the crowd and launched the missile as the flew over them… sonic boom, missile roar, people screaming/running… As you said, those were the days… Another Mugu related cluster … a JANFU (Joint Air Force /Navy F*ck Up!) … The Battle of Palmdale

Yeas, I read about the battle of Palmdale previously. Heaven help America if it was a Soviet attack. :united_states::rofl:

Bit of a thread drift though. Here in Ireland we had an annual airshow at a horse racing track called Fairyhouse. One year the USAFE sent an RF4 from Germany. Obviously it’s a racecourse so the flypast was close. In fact the commentator felt the heat of the burners. Later three F15s made a final Flypast, went vertical and headed directly towards a contrailing airliner. I found out later that It was a Middle Eastern Airlines 707 out of Beirut. The Captain saw them coming, panicked, thinking he was under attack.

I saw a fatal crash at one of the airshows but one very near miss with a glider which started a loop far too low. I was looking away because I knew it wasn’t going to end well but he managed to land. The crowd loved it but I was close enough to see the expression on his face and the ground crew.

But who am I to judge. I fiew skydivers for several years. There were several incidents. Some of which are on YouTube. No I won’t link.

Anybody have a lead on Max Decals Max4820 IAC 1922-52 details Or ,at least the Reims- Cessna FR-172 section. Also, the 1/48 SAIA 260 kit (with An tAerchĂłr markings )has rocket pods. Same as used on the FR-172?

No…

H.P.

Looks like that would be a ‘no’. 260s is only 7shot. Also looks longer.
