Okay, going to admit it. When we took our steam trip at the end of October, I did lurk around the locomotive taking in big deep breaths and holding it, trying to imprint it on my mind. I tried to be real subtle because I didn’t want to look like “one of those people” (which I am, but I just don’t want to look like one).

On the run back to St Louis, I think it was the first weekend of October in 2002, on Frisco 1522’s farewell excursion, I stood in the open (upper) door of a baggage car not far behind the engine trying to breathe in and imprint those smells and sounds. Doppler affected the sound of going through crossings, the stack talk of the locomotive going from field into built up areas, the sway and rattled the track, so many things.

There is also a company that offers a large selection of scented “Smoke Juice” to use with you model steam locomotives.

I used an asian incense burner in my train room once and the scent sort of stuck to the wood models over time, which was kind of cool. Gave the space a more aged feel without even trying. Some of those old train station smells people are after remind me a bit of the earthy resin they use in those.

A while back I got to a couple dozen model railroad magazines from the '70s and '80s. In the mid or early '80s, there was a company that sold 6 to 10 scented oils that produced train smells. Do any of you remember them? I come through those magazines when I have time, but have not found the advertisement again.

I remember loving the smell of coal in Berlin - particularly the brown coal that was not of good quality - but it sure smelled good. Probably all of the carcinogens in it. They still ran steam in the East while I was there.
If there were such a product, I’d get it. Olfactory memories can be very strong. Sometimes the smell of diesel on a cold morning takes me right back to Kabul, just like smelling restaurant green beans reminds my of a grade school cafeteria.
