Sdkfz 250 and 251 kits as basis for conversions

I am toying with the idea of using Das Reich’s 1/16 250 and 251 with engine and interior details as basis for conversion into sdkfz 10 and 11, the unarmored half tracks based on the same chassis.

The 251 kit clearly shows it is a body on frame construction, so presumable the frame is similar or identical to the sdkfz 11. simply not install the belly armor or the armored body would work to make it the basis of an unarmored version.

But the 250 kit suggest it was a unibody construction where there is no frame inside the armored body. was this just Das Werk’s short cut or did 250 truly have no frame? If so how did Sdkfz 10, which had no armored body to form a rigid unibody, work?

Ambitious projects Chuck.

The SdKfz 251 HL kl 6p chassis arrangement is similar to the SdKfz 11 HL kl 6 chassis, and share many common aspects, but there are notable differences. As per Panzer Tracts 15-2 - Mittlere Schuetzenpanzerwagen Sd.Kfz 251:

However, in regard the SdKfz 10 / SdKfz 250, whilst the design was based on Demag’s SdKfz 10 D7 chassis, the 250 was a completely different chassis - D7p. The main issue is the 250 was shortened. As per Panzer Tracts 15-1 - Leichter Schuetzenpanzerwagen (Sd.Kfz.250) Ausf.A & B

If you can lay your hands on these Panzertracts books, it will be well worth while.
