So let me put the word finish to this.

So think I’m calling this one done. I didn’t actually do any chipping on this finish (other than the Jerry and oil drums) and on a slightly dusty finish. Plus a bit of subtle streaking and grime.
Overall a really nice kit. Made a few errors with the tracks I had to correct and had to watch some of the fragile PE, but otherwise an enjoyable build.
Very nice
Looking great. I love this kind of finish and look, I would love to have all my models built-displayed in similar fashion but I always get carried away with the washes and the pigments and the chipping.
Looks very good.
I too like the subtle weathering.
Any opinions on this kit for 80€? I found a couple of reviews and builds but I am indecisive. My biggest issue are the rubber tires.
There is this option
Thanks all. In part the subtle weathering approach came about due to time away from this build and I wanted to kick it on. I also read somewhere that US WWII olive drab didn’t really chip.
This was the first time I’ve really felt comfortable with enamel weathering products - I usually find them harder to blend to my satisfaction than oils.
Other than an oil pin wash and acrylic fuel stains, it was all enamels.
I do need to do a really dirty/muddy tank again though at some point, as not done one for a while. However aircraft build next, then probably some armour with a winter whitewash before any mud bath.
Please count me as officially joining the Shermania 2024 group build.
Starting my first Sherman build ever…
Definitely want to do an Allied build after six Jerry’s in a row and six more Jerry’s on the bench in process.
Hey Wade 50 years of building and you’re finally losing your armor virginity - finally building a Sherman to round out the “required” builds. Congratulations! Enjoy, it won’t be your last.
Good going. It’s a Tamiya kit, so I’d be surprised if you ran into any difficulties, but I have a small tip for your next Sherman: painting will be much easier if you leave the bogies off until you’re done It can be difficult getting paint into the deeper parts of them when they’re on the hull already. Not impossible, just harder.
@Jakko thank you for the painting tip.
Hopefully, I’ll be spraying Mr Surfacer on this beast sometime this coming weekend.
Decided, the sides were too smooth to suit me and added a bit of texture. The open sponsons, will have to be patched of course. Probably one of the better 1980’s era Tamiya kits overall.
Working on turret assemble.
This one is technically a 1990s kit, but about half of the parts (A, B and C sprues) are indeed 1980s Every time I look at the front, though, I keep thinking they grafted an M4A4 glacis plate to an M4 hull … which probably mostly says I’ve been looking at pictures of Shermans too much in recent years.
Thanks! That explains the uneven level of detail quality in some parts. I saw the 1987 in the lower hull didn’t check Scalemates. For 1990’s era, seems a bit lack luster compared to other 90’s era Tamiya kits I’ve built. It builds nicely, fits well and quickly major plus for the Tamiya M4 kit in my opinion.
What brand paints do you like for olive drab for one of these beastie?
I like Mr. Aqueous Hobby Olive Drab (2) for new paint, and their Olive Drab (1) for when it’s weathered and faded a bit.
I’ve just noticed you have the air scoops at the rear corners on backwards. Not impossible, but somewhat uncommon.
