How can you model when it’s hot enough to warp all those resin AM goodies?

Central Air was invented by modelers when the wives complained about them taking up all the space in the Iceboxes with their half finished kits. True story…

Well it has been more wet and Humid here in Brisbane Australia, so my ability to paint models was zip… until the last day or so. I mixed up some Tamiya Light Stone BS 61 as per Mike Starmer’s mix and… it was horrible! I know he says it will startle a few modellers, but that is an understatement - it ends up Bile yellow!

so disturbing I could not look at it. With the rest of the mix I added more white 50/50 to the original colour. I got something much more tasteful - basically it is now Portland Stone!:

I have painted a lot of the stowage to go in this, on top of the cardboard packing you can already see, but the rain has put me back on finishing time. Tomorrow I head off overseas for 2 months, so unless there is an extension of time for after I get back, I will not finish this by the due date. First world problem I guess

Second looks much better.

When I first built this in the early 2000’s I painted it Humbrol desert pink and blue cammo stripes. No idea why, I thought it would look good. Think I still have what’s left of it somewhere.

I had sense to get a couple more when I could to do a more realistic job.

Desert pink and blue were actual colours trialled by the LRDG. They tried various camo combinations over the years. Somewhere I have a modelling magazine with an article on it.

I got the idea from somewhere, but I don’t recall where. I certainly don’t remember seeing any pictures just a written description. There’s certainly been a lot more research into the schemes since. I’ve got a couple of magazine articles with profiles somewhere.

Got some decals down today on the Glen and flag insignia on the I-58’s conning tower. When they’re settled down I’ll add the red dot.

Some great work here all round but after just moving and some ill health I’m going to have to withdraw from the campaign.
I can currently only model from a coffee table so no airbrushing or even painting at the moment until I get a model desk set up which will probably be next month. Bed and seating take priority.

Wish you all the best for the health first and the new settlement.

I dig the revised color.
As for the pink, the Brits painted Spits pink as well. It’s supposed to take on the surrounding hues around dawn and dusk.
There were serious conversations about painting the F-117 pink as well but the idea was ultimately rejected by Air Force brass.

it was done with RAF Tornado’s as well and was highly effective in GW1

@phantom_phanatic Might this ring a bell? One of a relatively small number of Tamiya kits of the 70s I did not build but I always wanted to.

United States Navy painted periscopes of submarines pink. I can’t remember if they did that and World War Two or if that was a Cold War thing. Oh yeah, and the Royal Navy had “Mountbatten Pink” for some of their warships that operated in certain areas.

Tru-Color Paint’s range of excellent paints includes it.

Now that would make a great What-If scheme!

@JPTRR have one of these SAS Pink Panthers in the stash. I did make a start on it but the custom mixed pink I tried to do it was bit too Barbie pink! I might have to strip it and try again.

As for the Mountbatten pink, I did Matchbox’s HMS Kelly in that colour. Should still have the WEM enamel I bought for it somewhere in a draw. It’s more like a purplish grey.

Wasn’t there a US submarine in the Philippines at the start of the war that got painted pink???

I think there was a famous actor in command of it at the time…

Yes! There’s even a documentary about it:

Wanted to build that for a while since Hobbyboss did all those 1/700 subs. Anyone know what class of boat it was they used in the filming?

Balao. Very close to Gato in appearance, so it passed reasonably well, even though it didn’t make its appearance until later during the war than the film depicts.
