Oh they get rockets too ! A component of at least one of the drop systems incorporates retro rockets hanging from the parachutes that are triggered by a probe extending from the bottom of the BMD.

Yeah the rockets fire right before the pallet touches down.
I’ve always been skeptical about the BMDs being dropped in a real situation. You’d have to be very selective in using them. I can see using them against lightly armed troops with no fire support but even they carry anti-tank weapons that could destroy the BMDs being their thin skinned. Just curious……

The M72 LAW should have no problem knocking them out. Those knocked out T-54s in Vietnam, which had much heavier armor. Any of the more current man portable types should have no problem.

Yes that’s what I figured Skip. They are very thinned skinned.

In the 80’s the Soviets attempted to drop BMD’s with crews seated in them. They all wound up paralyzed from spinal compression!
