Thank you kindly Peter…
Got some painting done. Painted and masked the roundels first, then did the underside colour. Currently it’s masked up waiting for the second upper colour.
Looking good Iain
Almost ready for gloss coat and the rest of the decals.
Brown painted.
Need to touch up a couple of small spots on the green, it was a little too easy to rub off. Have not had that problem with that paint before so thinking it maybe doesn’t play well with the primer I used which is slightly glossy.
The white guns also got some green overspray on them so will have to touch them up too.
Also didn’t quite get the white and blue of the fuselage roundels lined up as well as I could have but I’m not going to do anything about that at this stage, hopefully the rest of the decals will draw the eye away from that screw up.
nice work lain. the roundels look fine to me.
Thanks. The wing ones came out ok, the fuselage ones are a little off.
I’ll show off my shame once i get the flat coat on, which is unfortunately waiting on replacement parts for my airbrush after the needle nut went disappearing across the garage while giving it a deep clean.
planning on using lifecolor for the ocean grey, it’s a crap paint that always gives me issues. going th use my paasche H single action thinking it will allow the lifecolor to spray better.
looking at the paint in the bottle it looks too dark to me but i am not too knowledgeable with RAF colors so i made a sample and would like to ask what you all think is the closest shade.
the left stripe is right out of the bottle, the middle has white added and the right has a little more white added. are any of these three shades close?
sorry if pix is a little washed out. looks better on the phone screen
Thanks Joe
Im no expert and I used the ocean grey from the AK set, but the straight out the bottle tone looks the best to me ?
thanks johnny. i should mention the paints are darker in person.
think i may go with something between the first two.
anyone else before i go to the bench to paint?
Joe
I agree, the one on the left. Ocean grey is darker that one usually thinks.
Michael
thanks, like i said the picture is a little washed out. it is actually much darker. i can barley tell the difference between the bare grey plastic of the eduard sprue and the paint. my phone is not the best with pictures. it is actually darker than the grey on johnny’s plane above. then again i think the light is washing out the color on his too.
Joe
well got the grey sprayed with great difficulty. lifecolor paint is horrible.
think i could have lightened it a little more
pilot wanted to check out the progress on his plane
Joe
Hello! My official entry pic and current progress post.
Since I already built the Revell Mk IIa it only made sense to follow it up with the IXc. I started removing everything from the sprues the night before and during my ‘professional development’ zoom meetings all day was able to clean all the parts while the admins, department heads, and speakers went through their spiels. This work-from-home stuff has its perks.
As with the first, this will be OOB but instead of Mission Models this one will be done with the AK Real Air colors so I get to compare how they went on and look over all.
Anyway:
And as of now:
Each container basically represents a page of instructions.
Regardless of whether it is accurate or not I am going to go with the Day Fighter scheme to contrast with my IIa’s Temperate scheme AND the clipped wings as I could not find enough evidence online to tell me ‘no’ definitely. If I don’t manage to get another Spit built before I go I want them to have an obvious visual difference even my wife would notice.
After I finished cleaning the parts and my meetings ended I celebrated by making my daughter and I dinner (my wife is rehearsing for a play - community theater - so mac’n’cheese got me back downstairs quickly) and then spraying a sealer coat on some parts for my 1/16 Pz.Kpfw III Ausf. J.
I am hoping to finish this in time, as the Mk IIa stalled out at the paint masking stage and took four and a half years to complete.
was looking forward to taking the masks off and this is what i got
i decided to use frisket since it is supposed to be low tack. it ended up pulling paint off the cowl and leaving thick glue behind on the wing. i blame the lifecolor grey paints for this partially since it is very scratchable even after a couple days drying. although the spots on the fuselage that i used masking tape came off fine. i hope the goo gone will remove the glue residue without ruining the paint. i will then have to mask off the green and respray the grey. at least it is only the cowl and left wing.
Joe
Damn, hope you get that sorted out.
Try using blue tack joe instead of the tape to fix it. Its tacky but not the same as masking tape.
Hope you sort it bud. Spit is looking good.
Pete
i was going to use the fun tack originally but i was concerned it would not leave a hard seperation line. the frisket is SUPPOSED to be low tack. i will need to touch up some of the green so i may test it with a small piece.
That is a tough one, Joe. Difficult to fix, but not impossible. Hope you can save it!
thanks jesper, started the process today
BTW anyone that uses lifecolor paints, good news, you don’t need to use chipping solution or hairspray. just use goo gone and it will strip the paint away without it as the photo above shows. the vallejo was unaffected.
using frisket i retraced the green and carefully cut the masks out on a piece of glass and made sure the masks covered the green exactly. i will airbrush a new coat of grey next and then touch up a couple of spots on the green. this time i will not leave the masks on overnight.
